Aye, you've put it clearer, and I'm man enow not to resent it : )

Oh, now I see.  I should have brains to remember that some people still remember the word "after" does  have a meaning that does not imply chronological succession.

Thread duty:

landed today, and now playing as I post this

I'm a sort of bass-baritone*  and therefore of course any CD recital by a bass, a baritone, or a bass-baritone is a good CD.

*sort of because 1)my vocal range apparently includes the full standard range for a baritone, and somewhat lower than that, but not low enough to qualify as a true bass  2)it's been years since I've done any singing other than in the shower or in the car accompanying the music on my daily commute, so heaven only knows what my real range is now.   But I can still do a mean falsetto.

I do like the Gewandhaus Qt in their Beethoven SQ boxset very much - the samples on this Mendelssohn sounded very good too.

Ha.  I didn't know Neville Longbottom had recorded a CD!  What works does he perform?

Benjamin Grosvenor's basically self-published debut (I think it was $6 on Amazon?) includes three etudes by Kapustin, two sonatas by Scarlatti, Iberia Book I, a couple Chopin nocturnes, and a clutch of transcription encores - the likes of J. Strauss/Cziffra.  Here's Jed Distler:

QuoteA self-produced CD release with a dorky title, the performer's name virtually hidden from sight, no catalog number, and little distribution beyond the artist's website and a few online retailers usually does not warrant serious attention. But not this time. The 17-year-old pianist Benjamin Grosvenor has garnered extraordinary acclaim over the past few years, and his solo-debut disc thoroughly justifies all the buzz, and then some.

He tosses off three of Nikolai Kapustin's jazz-influenced etudes with effortless aplomb and debonair style. The same goes for his beautifully sculpted Scarlatti sonatas, and swift, somewhat restrained, yet constantly singing Chopin Nocturnes (hopefully more harmonic tension and linear interplay will someday figure into Grosvenor's interpretations).

True, Grosvenor pushes Moszkowski's Caprice espagnol to breakneck limits, yet his innate musicality and colorful control save the day. By contrast, the pianist characterizes the three Iberia selections with beautifully proportioned rubatos, playful accents, and skillful pedaling. The last three selections convinced me less: Grosvenor's rounded-off and elongated phrasing prettifies what ought to be roughed up in the Cziffra transcriptions, and causes Love Walked In's melodic trajectory to sag. Still, these are quibbles, not high crimes, and I hope that this disc will turn out to be the first of many major milestones for this amazingly gifted musician. Hear for yourself by visiting www.benjamingrosvenor.co.uk. [4/29/2010]

His second disc, also seen above, combines the four Chopin scherzi and Gaspard; next up, this summer, is an album of Saint-Saens, Gershwin, and Ravel for piano and orchestra (RLPO/Judd).

Sarge

That's a pretty good one, Sarge. I didn't care much for the way Temirkanov handled the Largo. It seems like it could have been more intense and suspenseful. The rest of the 5th was well-played as is the 6th, but Caetani currently reigns supreme in the 6th.
