And yes, Furtwangler was amazing in most of the German tradition. I enjoy him in Beethoven, Brahms, Schubert, Bruckner, and a bit of Wagner, although I'm not a huge opera fan. More because I haven't invested the time in the genre, I think...

My favorite recordings of Furtwangler are probably wartime Beethoven 4th and 9th and the Brahms 2nd concerto he did with Fischer. But it's so hard to choose amongst such quality, isn't it?

Indeed. It is amazing how at different time he makes drastically different interpretations that fits the moment. Among the wartime 9th, the one in the early stages of war, the one in occupied Sweden, the before the end of war, and the one after the war gave us totally different takes on the same work. It shows both the greatness of Beethoven's work and the greatness of Furtwangler the great interpreter.
Do what I must do, and let what must happen happen.

[..] the one in occupied Sweden, the before the end of war, and the one after the war gave us totally different takes on the same work.

Sweden maintained neutrality throughout the war and did not get occupied. This is why it is actually one of the rare occasions that Furtwängler conducted outside of Germany during the war - he refused to conduct in occupied countries.

+1....

Welcome! Schubert's 9th is one of my absolute favourites, and Brahms is simply amazing. Shame to hear you do not like Mahler too much though, hopefully that will change sometime! :)
