Well, some people genuinely dislike big boxes... I know it, Don and Que... but I'm not among them:  :P  ;D

This finally turned up and I had a very enjoyable couple of hours listening to it last night. The sonic improvement over the Regis edition is noticeable with very little variance in volume from CD to CD. This in fact helped to highlight the wide dynamic range that Kempff uses. In places where other pianists might opt for mezzo forte, Kempff sometimes takes a quieter approach making the contrast even more noticeable when he decides to increase the volume.

Also, this is not the LvB I'm used to listening to. There is less bombast, a bit more introspection and some interesting phrasing giving a fresh approach to these ears. I'm reminded of how I felt when I first listened to how Gilels approaches the LvB sonatas. This is different and I'm not sure if I like it. Well, I like most of the Kempff I previewed last night including Op2/3, Op 13, Op 22, Op 57, op 27/1, Op 10/1. I'm so glad I got this especially as it reunited me with my first LP of LvB sonatas 8. 14 and 23.

Just ordered this:

Fantastic performances, Conor.  I especially love the Petrushka recording on this.  Turned this into my favourite Stravinsky work!  :)

Thanks Ray - I bought this recording after seeing it in the "recently discussed on gmg" ad banner. I dont own much Stravinsky so I am really looking forward to hearing it, good to know the performances are great! :)

Well, I believe Don doesn't like box sets as such, but I am quite happy with huge sets like complete Bach's cantatas, organ works, Scott Ross' Scarlatti set, etc.  :D
Sets that have a clear focus on a body of works or a performer.

It's the mishmash sets with odd bits and pieces that make my collector's heart cringe...  :P ;D

If it sounds as good as it looks, you'll have a winner. :)

Petrou's series of Handel recordings on MDG (of which I have two) are very good, so I think we are finally in posession of a reference recording of Alessandro, the last one of Handel's major recordings in dire need of a modern recording (Kuijken's is 26 years old).

Here are a few small orders placed with various Amazon US MP vendors over the past two days ...

www.importcds.com now lists it for $26.79.  I have pre-ordered my copy.

I'm gambling that Amazon won't beat that.

(Searching for the set on importcd.com is well-nigh impossible since they omitted the artists name from the CD title, so that searches for "Lim" come up empty.  I only found it by searching for the release date.)

No purchase today. The weekend was devoted to other pursuits :D. I feel a sense of loss. :-[

Not a purchase, but I checked this out of the library today.  Haven't heard any of this, so it ought to be interesting.  6 cds..

The man that hath no music in himself,
Nor is not moved with concord of sweet sounds,
Is fit for treasons, stratagems, and spoils.
The motions of his spirit are dull as night,
And his affections dark as Erebus.
Let no such man be trusted.
