Bruckner: Symphony No. 5 In Bb Major, WAB 105, "Tragic"

Im listening to Bruckner too :) - I've been listening to the 1st and 5th today. I really like the big themes in the slow movements of these 2. I've also been enjoying the 2nd Symphony a lot lately. HVK's version of the 1st is really great I think and im also very keen on his 7th. I was a bit disappointed in the first movement of the 4th (the high strings in the opening sound a bit off?) and the slow Scherzo of the 8th but otherwise this set has been a real treat. I am looking forward to recieving Wand's set in a couple of weeks and seeing how this one compares too.

Mozart.

Piano Concerto No. 21 K. 467.

Camerata Salzburg, Stefan Vladar, Piano & conducting.

Recorded in 2006. CD VIII.

Lucid with a clear line, open and invigorating. Tempi are not too fast, and the music can unfold very gracefully. Vladar is a clear headed performer, who infuses the music with just enough romance. A bit square at times, could have done with more playfulness, and a tad more flexibility. But those are minor quibbles. Well recorded. A open sound stage in which the piano is placed in a very natural way.

Very appropriate music for a sunny day in autumn:

I think this should be regarded as the reference for Dvorak Symphonies.

Medtner: Fairy Tales
Prokofiev: Sonata No. 4

Georgy Tchaidze, piano

The Medtner is especially fine - dazzling and unusual - and the Prokofiev is big-boned, earthy. Haven't listened to the Mussorgsky Pictures at an Exhibition yet. (No Amazon link - CD just came out recently.)

Revisited perhaps the greatest Op 109 committed to disc, and a first listen to the 1960 Marlboro Festival Op 110.  It's of comparable quality.  The 1971 recording of 110 is also included in the set.

Listening to Violin Concerto. Sounds great so far. I can tell this is going to be quite the workout for Josefwicz. :) Salonen's music is incredibly hard to perform. If a virtuoso like Josefowicz or Bronfman have admitted difficulties for these concerti, they've got to be challenging to perform well.

I would say it reminds me of Adams' Violin Concerto in the sense that the violin part is relentless almost through the entire work. A good, Modern concerto.

Ozawa
Berliner Philharmoniker
Prokofiev Symphonies

From this, which I do not have:

Listening to number 4.  What an interesting symphony!  Why have I missed this in the general melee of things?  This is like all the 'beautiful music' and 'busy passages' Prok could come up with, all jammed into an eminently melodious and sometimes tempestuous 4rth Symphony.  It may be that Ozawa is bringing something out of Prokofiev with the Berliners - it is something I have never heard before and it is brilliant.  Out of nowhere this recording has got me interested in Prokofiev and his fourth symphony.  I suppose that's what happens when something resonates with you to the very core.    :P
I do not have the box this comes from, but by all the Gods I will get it.

Listening to #1. I don't like the overall 'distant' sound of this set but the First truly shines.
