What a cool piece!

Sergeant Rock

Not HIP, and by a conductor not associated with this period, but the results are stylish with a small band and brisk tempos and wonderful singing from June Anderson and Cecilia Bartoli. Not a bagain-counter tenor anywhere ;D

Sarge
the phone rings and somebody says,
"hey, they made a movie about
Mahler, you ought to go see it.
he was as f*cked-up as you are."

No, no, paulb could tell that there was no point in listening to an entire piece from a 30-second clip, very different  8)
no, it was 1 minute of 17 different tracks each, which is a total of 17 minutes of the complete ballet

Martinu Symphony 4 Bryndon Thompson/RSNO

Also gave a spin to Sonata 1.X.1905 "From the street" played by  Leif Ove Andsnes.  I only know the Firkusny recording.  The differences in these performances makes me want to hunt out some others.

Brahms Symphony no. 3 and 4 by Mravinsky/Leningrad PO. I was not bowled over, and I still have other favourite performances for these symphonies.

What a cool piece!

I have this on the way; Dorati sold it for me. Waiting for my Billy the Kid.

I've been very busy with Wagner's Ring... in terms of appreciation and study. For rest, I turn to Moravec's Chopin and Kempff's Beethoven.

Braga Santos
Concerto for Strings in D (1951)
Northern Sinfonia
Álvaro Cassuto

Harry

John Blackwood McEwen.

String Quartet No. 13 in C minor.

Chillingirian Quartet

McEwen is a phenomenon, no less. Hardly is there a composer that you can compare with him. The power and the uttering of these works defy description. There is longing, stretched out in long lines, and fade out dynamics, desperateness as in the Moderato, and Andante, cheerfulness in the Allegro vivace.............

Braga Santos
Sinfonietta for Strings (1963)
Northern Sinfonia
Álvaro Cassuto

Markedly more poignant than the Concerto from twelve years earlier.

Harry

John Blackwood McEwen.

SQ No. 3 in E minor.

Chilingirian Quartet.

Eminently beautiful, high class music, sophisticated, and genteel.

Braga Santos
Variações concertantes, for string orchestra, harp & solo string quartet (1967)

Wonderful opening gesture!  And that is Only The Beginning . . . .

Harry

John Blackwood Mc Ewen.

SQ No. 6 in A major. "Biscay"

Chilingirian Quartet.

Takes my breath away.
