Two sets of works, which were written for the same medium, by two mutually inspired men, within years of each other.

There's K. 421, of course. A work which is very special to me. But as a whole I prefer the Op. 33 much more. I wonder if I can survive without some D minor in the mix.

Ray, please listen to the Op. 33 some more before voting.

Gurn, I'm not even considering you.

;D

Just kidding. Now vote!

Up next: Who was the worse composer: Haydn or Dittersdorf? :P

picking the Mozart quartets just because i don't actually know them, and a desert island would provide a great opportunity for undisturbed listening

i suppose i tend to find Mozart more rewarding than Haydn in general though

Is that related to anything else other than the [consciously avoids the use of 'just' or 'mere'] pleasure of listening to it?

Op.33, specifically, the Apponyi, goes to the Island.

Not particularly. Much of Mozart's music seems structurally more convincing to me although it would be hard for me to articulate why in words

Harder question than it would seem at first blush.

OK, I just said that for the hell of it.  Haydn. 0:)

The only genre that I would choose Mozart over Haydn is in Opera. So naturally for this I'm choosing Haydn's Op.33.

Same here except for the solo keyboard works.  So, I pick Mozart on this poll.

Listening to Haydn's String Quartet in B minor, Op. 33/1, I have to say that Finale is one of the best I've heard.  :)  Awesome!!  :)

Wolfgang for me.
There's just more to the Mozart for me than the Haydn set, although perhaps it's only because I'm more familiar with the Mozart than the Haydn.

If I was forced to pick three sets of string quartets to save for posterity--or to give to a person just beginning their exploration of the genre-- they would be this set from Mozart,  Beethoven's late Quartets, and Shostakovich's cycle.

I voted for Mozart's Haydn quartets, although I like op.33 very much, especially #1 b minor and #3 C major, so it is a tough choice.

But I would certainly take Haydn's op.76, and probably also his op. 64, 54/55 and 20 sets each over both op.33 and the Mozart set (published as op.10)
