Tonight after dinner, our family of three watched:

Mahler 1
Mahler 4
Mahler 5
All with Bernstein conducting VPO.

(more details of the evening on the Kimi thread...)

No. This is the first time I listened to any of them.

Katsaris' Beethoven/Liszt really is a cut above the rest. (It's kind of surprising how much there is in the first place, actually, and then it's surprising how easily Katsaris is better than Gould and Biret. Howard is unacceptably dull and strangely Scherbakov is much less enthralling than he is in just about anything else I've heard him do.

Wow, Nav! You'd never heard Gaspard, nor the Valses before?

Nope, never before today. I've got many more shockers like that, you know. ;) (The PC, for another instance.)

Well: what do you think?![/font] : )

I'm looking at what recordings are available, if that's any indication. ;) It is music to which I would certainly return.

Scherbakov does not sound like he is convinced of the value of the music but decided to play it since they offered the contract. You are right in that he played just about everything else so much better.

Now:
Just to wash my head of all the Mahler:
Scarlatti Sonatas (Perehia)

Thank goodness people born in early September aren't referred to that way, otherwise I would be one for life.
