The country with the lowest teen pregnancy rate and the highest suicide rate in the world, with suicide being the leading cause of death for people under 40. The country where kids don't get to have a childhood because they study 16 hours a day, every single day.

Fascinating.  8)
Anyone with additional thoughts?

TheGSMoeller

They make great films, some of the best of the past decade.

Double-checked this...
remember specifically seeing this on wikipedia, but I don't see that any more. From another source, I see that it is Japan. This would actually make more sense. But... maybe another source would be helpful to get my facts straight.  ::)

I can't even remember seeing a Korean film ever in my life.  :-X

For starters, you could no wrong by seeing any film made by Park Chan-wook. In fact, see OldBoy before it's Americanized and ruined with its Spike Lee directed remake.

I've met several Korean people and all of them have a humility and kindness to them. Beautiful people in general.

At least try the original version of The HostMother is another of the same director's films that I'd also highly recommend (though very different.)

I'm surprised by how many Korean films I've seen without really trying: Memories of Murder; The Chaser; The Good, the Bad, and the Weird; Oldboy; The Man from Nowhere; Moss...

I will keep that in mind. I'm reading some of the plots, and they sound very fascinating; something that I could see myself enjoying.
Weren't you the one that recommended Pi to me? You know, it would be a good idea to listen to your recommendations, now, wouldn't it?  ;)

Not sure if it was me (although Pi is good), and Daverz mentioned some other good films as well, primarily for me, The Host.

I can recommend South Korean horror movies PHONE, THE STORY OF 2 SISTERS and INTO THE MIRROR. The Kiefer Sutherland movie Mirrors is a mediocre Hollywood "remake" of the last.
Spatial distortion is a serious problem deteriorating headphone listening.
Crossfeeders reduce spatial distortion and make the sound more natural
and less tiresome in headphone listening.

...a mediocre Hollywood "remake"...

A very common, and well deserved phrase.

I thought Kiefer Sutherland and mediocre were synonyms?

My only experience with South Korea was two long layovers at Incheon and I've enjoyed both immensely. Yes, I did use the words "layover" and "enjoy" in the same sentence! I really miss Korean food - I had no idea what I was ordering but it was delicious.

This may belong in the "Cats or Dogs" thread.

If they were studying less and having more sex, I guarantee the suicide rates would be lower.

the phone rings and somebody says,
"hey, they made a movie about
Mahler, you ought to go see it.
he was as f*cked-up as you are."

If "they" meant everyone, yeah, maybe. But they would have to be much less conservative in their sex ed to prevent all of the unwanted pregnancies, which I wouldn't even be surprised if they led to double suicides often (maybe less in your scenario, though, since everyone would be doing it).

I remember speaking to a teacher at my school last year who was teaching a student from Korea. He got a B on a test and just broke down and started crying ("I failed my parents," etc.)

A good reminder that there really is too much of a good thing (like education). Seems to me that their obsession with the West is not a healthy one, but one that is sick and almost perverse. The cultural standards that a woman there "isn't beautiful" unless they have eyelid surgery to look more western is just pathetic. Really? They should take pride in themselves more and support all walks of life, rather than this successful westerner envy thing.

Still better than Africa, though.  ;)
