Now playing CD1 from the following set, which I think is one of the best versions of WTC ...

This looks good...the only Holst I own is 3 versions of The Planets.
It is worthwhile exploring beyond the planets. One of my favorite cds is this one (and the sound is excellent too):

Like Neal (ukrneal) points out, Holst is worth exploring beyond The Planets. Try Egdon Heath, Somerset Rhapsody, The Hymn of Jesus, and Hammersmith.

Thanks all for the Holst recommendations.  I actually have 5 versions of The Planets if you count Tomita... ::)

Have it and enjoy it!  Those Telarc's tended to have great sound as well.

PS It was fun going to your link and seeing all those "classic" cds others bought with this.
There will never be another era like the Golden Age of Hollywood.  We didn't know how to blow up buildings then so we had no choice but to tell great stories with great characters.-Ben Mankiewicz

Now:

Listening to the always gorgeous Florida Suite. Quite possibly the best performance of this work I've heard. Handley is an underrated Delian.

Gold Knight

Gustav Mahler--Symphony No.4 in G Major, featuring the Chicago Symphony Orchestra and soprano Judith Biegen under James Levine.
Gustav Mahler--Symphony No.7 in E Minor, once again with the James Levine led Chicago Symphony Orchestra.
Vaughan Williams--Symphony No.2 {"A London Symphony"}, performed by the London Philharmonic Orchestra under the stick of Sir Adrian Boult.
Vaughan Williams--Symphony No.3 {"A Pastoral Symphony"}, again featuring Maestro Boult, this time at the New Philharmonia Orchestra's helm.

I can scarcely believe no-one has posted what they're listening to for almost 3 hours.  This must be a GMG record.  To stem such a negative flow, here is what is in my tray @ 09:08hrs...

What a great way to start the day!

Florestan

Unlike harpsichord, for which these sonatas were originally written, I can listen to the guitar for extended periods of time.

Has anyone else hear this disc? The music is nice and quite original (nothing like Scarlatti, let alone Haydn or Mozart) --- but there are some horrendous noises in the background, as if while Giuliano was playing somebody else just scratched randomly the strings of another guitar. ??? This is particularly annoying for the more lyrical pieces. I seriously doubt that the sound engineer, or Giuliano himself, listened to the final product, because if they did and okay-ed it they must have had a temporary deafness.  ;D
