i think it was corelli who wrote the first set of variations on this spanish dance, for violin. i think many others wrote variations as well. i want to collect different versions but all i can find are variations by the following composers:
corelli (violin)
marais (viola da gamba)
gemignani (orchestra)
sor (guitar)

i guess this cd would be a good start but still, i don't think it has every version:

Indeed, it was Corelli who wrote the original variations. Since its conception though, themes from La Folia appear all over the vioin repotoire. I know Kreisler wrote an adaptation, as did, I believe Paganini, to name a couple not on this list. I'll look into it, though.

I have a lovely vision that Gurn has already thoroughly checked out the site, and, being Gurn, has got hold of the entire Britney Spears oeuvre. And, also being Gurn, he has already memorised it all by its catalogue number. Which I assume would naturally have to be a BS number. ;D

Oh, I'm sure everyone else already has, too. BTW, Brittany's works have an WT (white trash) number, actually. :D

What I do remember is that Corelli was only the 34th chronologically. A couple big names before him were Lully, Marais and Matteis (Matteis being the violinist of those 3). :)
