Someone has posted the radio broadcast - incredibly bad sonics, warts and all - on YouTube for the interested.
This might be old news - I've been away for a while.
Truthfully, I can see why he withdrew it, and, of course, he did MUCH better with the 3rd, 6th, and 8th.

When, a few months before his death, Rachmaninov lamented that he no longer had the "strength and fire" to compose, friends reminded him of the Symphonic Dances, so charged with fire and strength. "Yes," he admitted. "I don't know how that happened. That was probably my last flicker."
