Another gem from Greg!

First-Listen (I believe to the works, as well as performance) - gorgeous!  I'm normally not a period instrument fan, but this is sublime, and hitting every spot!!   :)

Listened to Cello Sonata no. 1. An interesting, though not entirely convincing, work and excellent performance. The ending of the Presto movement is quite disturbing, to say the least! :)

I highly disagree, but I may be a little biased. ;) I think Cello Sonata No. 1 is a fine work.

Continuing through the Fleisher box in case I surrender to temptation and order the giant Rubinstein box for $100.

A new acquisition. Listening to Aion composed in 1961. Totally awesome!!! :D I love these ambient soundscape works. Great performance as far as I can tell. I haven't heard any other performance of this work to make any comparisons.

As with most composers, I prefer Schnittke's orchestral works to his chamber works. I'm going to give the concertante works on that Chandos set another listen over the next couple days. The Cello Concertos are among my favorite works by Schnittke.

Have you heard Schnittke's Hymns for chamber ensemble, Kyle?

If you don't have the Pollini already, I'd say yes.  The 70s recordings are close to essential.  The Vivarte box is very good, but also variable.  The smaller scale works fare better, relatively speaking, than the post-Baroque orchestral and choral works.  It's not essential.

Listening to Violin Concerto No. 3. For me, should be counted as one of the greatest VCs of the 20th Century.

Yes a short one in latin, which you can see, if you download the faximile of his own first edition from this webpage:

That link isn't working for me, it says that there is currently no text on the page.
