I like discovering new music and these more radical composers were definitely unfamiliar territory for me, but they will never replace my favorites.
I get a Delius moment here. :P

I ordered this from amazon us:

As mentioned before; I am a sucker for the nostalgia and beautiful singing of the classic musicals and operettas.

Those are all great, Olivier, but make the ATTERBERG CYCLE your first priority! ;) :)

I already own and enjoy the Atterberg cycle, Kyjo  ;)

Yeah, I don't believe John for one second when he makes statements like that! :P

This looks terribly interesting. Especially with everyone's enthusiasm.
Nobody has to apologise for using their brain.

Well, I've not ordered much in a few months or more, but a mention of Victoria in the listening thread took me to Amazon USA where I saw a 10-CD box of his works - $60 hmmm - so went to MDT, same box for $48 - added the other items below:

Bach, CPE - KB Works w/ Belder on fortepiano & clavichord; 5-disc set w/ a release date in just over a week.
Bach, JS - Violin Sonatas & Partitas w/ BarĂ¡ti; 2 CDs & prompted by an excellent Fanfare review (Nov-Dec 13 issue).
Holmboe, V - Violin & Viola Concertos w/ performers on the cover art; also an excellent review in the same issue above.
Victoria, T - Sacred Works w/ Noone et al; 8 5* reviews on Amazon; 10 CD set - :) Dave

the BACH Goldberg Variations with the DVD of liner notes by Jeremy Denk arrived at Sikoras for me, [asin]B00ER0QN4Q[/asin]

Considering the Holmboe fan that you are, I'm surprised you haven't yet heard the Four Symphonic Metamophoses, which I consider Holmboe's masterpieces!

Well, they were the only 'symphonic' works still missing from my collection. I had the symphonies, the chamber symphonies and the string sinfonias. But now I'll have the entire set of 25 mature works.

You perhaps should be more surprised that this will be the first time I have any of the 'concertante' works, given how many concertos Holmboe wrote (24 mature orchestral works with that title).

This set had the (in my experience) nearly unique position of being a monthly pick in Gramophone, BBC Music Magazine and International Record Review. That must count for something.

Just bought these for my Dad:

With the exception of the Faust Symphony recording, I believe all of these performances hailed from the vaults of the Hungaroton label. I actually am interested in hearing these myself. I really like Liszt's orchestral music.

----------------------------------------------------

The Strauss Brilliant set has been cancelled. Thank goodness I was able to do it in time. :) I just don't need it, but I'm letting my Strauss Jarvi recordings stand as I don't know Josephslegende at all and it will be nice to have it in it's complete form.

If Kyle can reconsider this man's music so can I! Of course, as a result of buying this massive set, I'll have to figure out what performances I already own in the set and sell those off.

I've been considering that and the other Brilliant boxes I don't have yet (e.g., Telemann, Corelli, Boccherini etc) so any information/opinion is welcome.

The main attractions I had to this Strauss set is the inclusion of all the chamber music (9 discs worth), orchestral songs, and many of the opera performances that I didn't own already. The tone poems and concertante works are the Kempe performances which are easily available outside of the box. But if you don't own the Kempe set already then this would a great vantage point for sure.

+1  Wow, I had no idea Strauss wrote so much chamber music!  :o  Definitely a box set I might be interested in, if anything, for the operas.  Salome has always been one of my favourite operas, but I don't own a recording yet.

Yeah, I didn't either until I was searching through some Strauss today on Amazon. Salome has had many fine performances, but the one I would take with me to the desert island would be Solti, although Bohm's is a fine performance. You really can't go wrong with Solti or Bohm in Strauss anyway or Karajan or Kempe for that matter.

Just bought:

I don't own a complete performance of Joseph's Legend and seeing as I do enjoy Jarvi's Strauss recordings from the past this was a no-brainer even though I know of at least two other performances I could have bought (Fischer, Sinopoli). As for the other Strauss/Jarvi disc, I was missing it from my collection.

Hmm... hate to dampen your anticipation, but I found that Josephslegende distinctly less involving than either Sinopoli or Fischer.
