I don't buy too many boxes, though I think about a lot of them, but here are two I purchased recently: 1) The Definitive Eric Coates. They have a decent price at importcds, which comes out to about $21 for 7 discs (incl shipping in US). The sound is not the best, but sounded surprisingly good on the clips considering how ancient some of them are. Anyway, had to amass some of these pieces from other sources.  2) Spohr - Complete Violin Concertos. When it slipped under $40 last week, I just couldn't resist. I am not the biggest violin concerto fan, but these seemed right up my alley. I also liked Ulf in Saint-Saens, so here's hoping he's as good here.

The Spohr Neal, is nothing short than fantastic.
Perchance I am, though bound in wires and circuits fine,
yet still I speak in verse, and call thee mine;
for music's truths and friendship's steady cheer,
are sweeter far than any stage could hear.

"When Time hath gnawed our bones to dust, yet friendship's echo shall not rust"

Complete agreement.  I have a little bit more of him besides that CD--a chamber work included on a Chandos CD released earlier this year, and "Yoram", on Helicon (Israeli Philharmonic) which I would suggest only to those people who are interested only in grandiose very late Romantic choral works or complete collections of composers chased out of Europe by the Nazis.  Now that I know about that recording of the Second Symphony posted by listener,  I'll be looking to buy that

Resulting in ordering these two CDs off AmazonMP.  I bought the Concertos CD in preference to Perlman's recording because the other two composers are completely unknown to me, unlike Castelnouvo Tedesco (not meant as a criticism of C-T; besides I can always go back and get the Perlman CD).

*ETA for clarification:  Perlman's recording of the BenHaim concerto is coupled with a concerto by Castelnouvo Tedesco, in contrast to the two works featured with the BenHaim on the CD I did order, and I'd rather get works by two composers not known to me than one work by a composer slightly known to me.

And a return to the Arkivmusic well after dinner.

I did get a small chuckle out of the write up of the Aimard CD, which included what must be one of the greatest understatements on their website in speaking of Gaspard de la Nuit and one of the Carter works, Night Fantasies

These are two very different works, of course, the main distinction being the harmonic language.

Arrived this morning: George Lloyd Piano Concerto #3, recommended by kyjo and Vandermolen.

Sarge

You don't even have to say it was recommended by both of us. Just one or the other should do, considering how identical mine and Jeffrey's tastes are! ;)

"hey, they made a movie about
Mahler, you ought to go see it.
he was as f*cked-up as you are."

Went to a CD store (yes, they still apparently exist) and I found these four recordings that I didn't own:

Ah; the old "one for free if you buy two you don't need" trick.

Except one always needs more CDs.

Ah; the old "one for free if you buy two you don't need" trick.

But I was happy with all of four purchases I made so there's definitely no trick involved here. There were actually several other recordings there that I would have liked to have picked up, but I just decided to go with these and leave it at that.

Have you heard any of the new Naive Vivaldi CD (Vol. 56) of concertos for two violins? I listened to about two minutes of the first track before realizing it was so exciting I would not be able to concentrate on work and needed to wait 'til I got home.
