Just bought:

Solti's last recording and a fitting one since he's going out with a Hungarian flair.

Bought these Elgarian beauties today:

Sergeant Rock

JPC finally delivered Elgar's The Apostles; and yesterday George Lloyd's first two Piano Concertos arrived.

I've barely made a dent in my purchase from the first, but I decided to load up, you know, in case there's an ice storm and I can't get out of the house, or something like that.

Among the possible gems, I couldn't wait any longer for the Bavouzet Beethoven, and the Amazon UK price, with shipping, is about a buck less than the current projected US list price.  And that Corey Cerovsek disc has been gnawing at me for a few weeks.

Todd if you have never heard Verdi's Otello you are in for a real treat!  That's his best work IMHO and boy is it a superb composition!

Whoa! My favorite Vieuxtemps concerto coupled to the Wieniawski concerto that I honestly enjoy more than the concertos by Bruch or Mendelssohn. Great coupling. Might have to find that.

I listened to Bavouzet Vol. II, disc 1, and while this sounds like a cop-out, I mean it to be genuinely descriptive: it's good, and exactly what you will expect.

Me too.  I've been going back and forth on this one for a while.  I'm sure I will enjoy it, but more than Schiff?  I'll have to hear.

Oh, I've heard it.  I've got three sets - the Toscanini/RCA, the Carlos Kleiber/Opera d'Oro (awesome, in poor sound), and the Muti/TDK on DVD.  I'm getting this because I want to hear a stereo version with someone other than Domingo in the lead.  It is one of Verdi's greatest achievements, to be sure.  I probably prefer Falstaff  and Don Carlo to this, but this is still one of the greatest operas yet penned.

The Cerovsek is still easy enough to find, but I suspect it will be hard to find in the not too distant future.  It's available marketplace only.  I'd probably not hesitate too long.

On the Bavouzet, I'm guessing you mean it is what I would expect from a Bavouzet studio recording.  I heard him play Op 53 live in November, and he sounded a bit different in person - a bit rougher, a bit more intense, and a bit less secure.  (The LvB was first, he got more secure as the evening went on, culminating in a iron fist/velvet glove Bartok piano sonata.)

Great buys, Paul! You'll enjoy them.

Alas, the first delivery of 2014 was not trouble-free; today I found out that one CD is missing from the recently delivered Solti Wagner boxset (CD No.10 - the 4/4 of Die Meistersinger), while another one has a doppelgänger (there are two copies of CD No.9 - the 3/4 of Die Meistersinger). Has anyone had a similar experience with missing discs from a boxset? Any insights as to how I should proceed? I've already contacted the (Amazon) seller, but I suspect that sending me just the missing CD as I asked will not be an option (also considering that they no longer list this particular boxset for sale)...

Good to see the libretti are provided. On a CD-ROM, yes, but they are provided. Interesting...

Come to think of it, it's nice to also have the libretti in digital form; I could transfer the pdf's to the iPad for easier perusal.

A composer completely new to me, but I heard Daniel (Madaboutmahler) speak highly of the Violin Concerto, but I'm anxious to hear the other works as well. Read about his life on Wikipedia. Very interesting composer.

Excellent. Thanks, Ray. Looking forward to exploring this composer. Speaking of some of his chamber music, I just bought this:

Solti's Elgar polarizes the Hillside. I'm definitely a fan though.
