Bought over about four years. ;D

Still the amount is huge!

I bought a C-cassette Walkman back in 1990 and now I have my iPod Shuffle. One AAP and one DAP in my whole life so far...

I have a 30 gig iPod (5th gen. w/video) and I wouldn't trade if for any other brand.  I use it every day on my commute and at home.  I charge my iPod daily, so I don't have an issue with battery life.  I've never seen the battery life used beyond the halfway point, so unless I go on a week-long wilderness trek, I don't foresee it being a problem.  I didn't try the headphones that came with it because I don't like that style and I knew they would sound like crap.  I have some relatively inexpensive Sony in-ear headphones that work nicely.  I like iTunes for organizing my music, so the combination works well.

My stepson bought a Creative Zen and it crashed within the first week, so we returned it.  I'm not saying this is typical of Creative's products, it's just my experience with them.

It may not be the best idea to recharge the battery at half-life everyday. AFAIK this will shorten the battery life in the long run. I try to drain the battery as much as possible before recharging.

I'm against ipod.  I think it's a fad, a cultural phenomenon.
Plus, I dont listen to music 24x7.  I have my CDs, I have my cell phone that has an mp3 player if I really need to listen to something.  I just find it annoying how everybody has an i-pod.  It's stylish, but a complete piece of crap that doesn't last more than a year.  Parts are not replaceable: battery cannot be replaced for example.

And the latest i-phone is complete garbage.  My 70-dollar smart phone has all the features of an i-phone, plus it has expandable memory and a replaceable battery.  I also think, that the touch-screen is a retarded idea.  Why not just use buttons?  I text really fast on my cell phone with predictive text, but with a touch screen, i'm sure i will miss the buttons and have lots of type-os.  Plus, reading the reviews, people said that the call quality is pretty crappy.

Saying an iPod is "a complete piece of crap that doesn't last more than a year" is a patently false statement.  Just because you find iPods annoying and stylish does not make them pieces of crap.  Moreover, there is no need to replace parts that do not break.  I got my iPod for Christmas in 2005 and have not had any problems with it.  Of course, I also take good are of it.  I suppose of one were to constantly drop an iPod on the street it might break.   ::)

Maddox' rant against the iphone was hilarious. :D

The phone + mp3 player sounds like a good money saver.  I'm with you though, don't need music on the go, I only listen at home now.  I used to want music on the go, but not anymore.  I'm one of the crazies that doesn't have a cell phone.  I want to be left alone unless I'm at home or at the office.  Before someone says "what if you're stranded?" the occassional time that I'm stranded doesn't justify paying $100 a month or whatever.

That's why I don't want a Blackberry.  ;D  I don't need my work email to follow me wherever I go, especially home.

I didn't read this whole thread because I didn't feel like it, but one good thing about iTunes is that you can download a single work without having to buy the whole album, because you know if there is more than one work on a classical disc, more often than not at least one of them will be subpar.  ;D

single question (can't be bothered to read 3 pages): got a 1gb shuffle, will it work on Vista? Any things to watch out for (okay, 2 questions)? Thanks.

I don't see why it would not work on Vista but what do I know? I use XP.

Well, I have a 60 GB Video.  It works fine with Vista.  So, I imagine it will work fine with a 1GB shuffle

thanks. It's not for me, I just want to make sure it's okay before I give it to someone. I once had the 80gb with XP. Worked fine, sold it after a week. Listening to music outdoors isn't for me.

Has anyone tried the iPod Touch? I'm thinking about getitng one as a gift as it looks pretty good for watching films on. Do you have to pay for the wifi connection (presuming there's free access somewhere, do you have to pay on top of that?)?

sound67

It's included.

Steve Jobs just introduced the new line of IPODs today. Nothing revolutionary, but the "Touch" gets a bit thinner (not that it was "fat" to begin with) and a bit cheaper.

Thanks. I'm using it now, amazing how efficient it is, laptop almost superfluous.

I like the look of the new iPod nanos; the previous model's also quite good, if the prices drop sufficiently before they disappear they'll make good bargains.

I have a 160GB Classic and am very pleased with it. I don't use it as a portable player for commute and the like (I have a no-name 2GB player for that) but as a convenient jukebox for when going to the summer house or somewhere with a hi-fi system I can connect it to. It couldn't possibly contain my whole collection (even if I bothered to rip it all) but its capacity allows it to contain more that enough - losslessly encoded - music for the periods I usually spend away from home.

ezodisy

160gb is almost 3 times the size of the hard drive on my laptop -- which is mostly full of films. While I could wish for an extra 20 or 40gb to hold more films, I cannot even imagine filling the same amount of space with just music. I actually find it unbelievable someone could. There's some benefit to it if you're off to boot camp for 6 months and have no access to music shops or the internet. But still, 160gb just for music? How much space does a lossless rip of a 60 minute CD take up anyway? Is possible to hear the difference between high quality mp3 and lossless with tiny earphones anyway?

Mark

160Gb for just music? Easy. I'm up to 100+Gb now, and that doesn't include anything on my CD racks. My laptop has about 600 CDs of music on it.
