I love his "La Mer" with the LSO :( (even though the audio engineering is so-so, the performance is mindblowing).

Ow, sad news. While it's rather stereotypical and crude of them to say that he "combined Teutonic precision with Iberian sensuality, just as his name suggests," he was a very good conductor whom I enjoyed seeing live a couple times and whose work on disc is often very good. (Try the Liszt on BIS.)

On the one hand, this is indeed very sad news.  On the other, he was able to go almost to the very end doing what he very clearly loved to do.  To be honest, I can think of worse fates.
