The Bruhns was the elusive disc that was on my wish list for so long (once upon a time rec. by premont)

Weird, I just got that one down from the shelf yesterday to add to my next week's listening queue.
I did not know it had become rare.  Now that I look, it seems that Arkiv Music in the USA still sells it for $10.

King Ubu tempted me into buying the Pergolesi disc with Jaroussky  ;)

Good move! It's wonderful!

That Casals/Prades #1 box is ace!  I vaguely remember a Musicweb (?) reviewer saying it was a mixed bag but generally laudable to very good, but some of those peformances really brought the pieces alive for me, dated sound and all.  I wonder if anyone knows the #2 set as well, and does it come as highly recommended?

I guess it is ... only got it a few weeks ago and listenend to about a third of it, but a mere look at its contents made it a must have for me (a bit more so even than Vol. 1, but after holding Vol. 2 in my hands it was quite clear I needed the first one as well).

The most interesting of my recent few is

[asin]B000001SFY[/asin]

The Harrison was started in 1939, for choir and percussion and only part was written. In 1954 he rescored and completed it. Both versions are great.

Might interest Karl as a possible piece to perform.

Good haul, Ritter !

Today, back from a visit to Archambault:

- the 4 Schumann symphonies under Nézet-Séguin, with the Chamber Orchestra of Europe (2 DGG)
- Schubert sonatas D. 845 and 960 with Maria-Joao Pires (DGG, 2014). At 83:24, it is the longest cd I have seen. Hopefully it will not cause any tracking problems.
- Beethoven: symphonies nos 6 and 8, plus the GrosseFuge in the Weingartner arrangement. Orchestre symphonique de Montréal, Kent Nagano (Analekta, 2011). They also recorded a 1st, 3rd, 5th, 7th and 9th. I think only the 2nd and 4th are missing. Nagano's way with these is swift, unimpassioned - fast and straight. Not really to my liking, but hey ! It's the local band, a sound I recognize and like.

- A threefer from DGG, Maurizio Pollini playing Chopin: Préludes op. 28; Etudes op. 10 and 25; 7 Polonaises. Reissues from the seventies, in a convenient slim package at 6$ a disc. Can't complain. Since I never really liked Pollini, I never acquired these discs. Time to listen without preconceptions.

A real gem there, Ken.

Speaking of Harnoncourt, he was part of one of two discs I just ordered. A few discs that have recently been discussed here in GMG..

The Currentzis Shostakovich 14 is a searing success. So is their Mozart Requiem if you haven't found out yet !

Prompted by tthis thread's list of purchases I have indulged in Vivaldi's Ercole and some Howells on Chandos.

Side comment--I did not report it at the time, but a few weeks ago I got the ECM recording of Part's Adam's Lament in the local used CD store, and was considerably impressed by it.

Last day of the Ricercar sales at discplus ... gave in, and quite so:

[asin]B00424NWIC[/asin]
[asin]B005IIA9GY[/asin]
[asin]B008CT7022[/asin]

[asin]B00I6522IY[/asin]
[asin]B00JJ9GU3Y[/asin]

Would have skipped the Millenarium set if it hadn't been for recent discussions here ... but as I plan to embark on a lengthy journey of discovery as far as late medieval and Renaissance music goes (that will not begin before end of the year though, at least not as far as reading goes), this comes in more than handy! (Same goes for the third of the next bunch ...

I actually wanted to order a few more but they were out of stock (the musical instruments box/book, the Focroulle Bach organ box and another of those Ricercar cantatas sets, the Weckmann, to be exact, which seems to be completly OOP - too bad discplus often take weeks to update their website and delete entries for OOP discs). Anyway, this means the huge order will cost almost a third less, which ain't too bad either (and for Bach, organ works, I guess I might eventually want the cpo box anyways, which can be had rather cheaply at JPC's).

Added these (on sale, too):
