Clearly, this thread should be merged with the score quiz one... :)

Don't have one of my own, so here's a closeup (couldn't find a "proper" photo) from Wikimedia Commons. Attribution data is: By francescomucio (A tempo  Uploaded by Szczebrzeszynski) [CC-BY-2.0 (http://creativecommons.org/licenses/by/2.0)], via Wikimedia Commons)

This is one of the "books" sculpted in the front of the Warsaw University Library. The name of the file gives away the piece. This is supposed to be a reproduction of the first edition, if anyone's interested in that sort of thing.

Luke

It's OK, I knew that one - one of the last pieces I played on my piano in the old house, actually. Szymanowski, Etude, op 4 no 3 (is it no 3 - it's the famous one, anyway!)

Maciek

Yeah, I don't know the number either, but let me check... Yep, no. 3. Berlin 1906 edition.

That is one of the last words I ever heard my favorite uncle say. He was dying from cancer. When I told him he looked tired and I'd better let him rest, he replied, in his inimitable way, Sheeeeeit. Cracked me up. And he smiled too.

That was fun reading through last summer (2013). That was when I started really taking an effort to listen to new things instead of just replaying favorites. That would be mostly thanks to the mystery score thread and your interesting choices. That was the first time I ever saw the name 'Feldman', too. So, thanks!

That's pretty funny -- Joplin on an Easter card! When I graduated from high school five years ago my friend gave me a 1000-piece puzzle of a string quartet. It took me four years to realize that it was a Beethoven SQ! :o :-[ :blank: I think it is 14 or 15. I have it hanging on my wall in my music room.

There's also this one (Haydn manuscript), but I don't like it as much. I saw it in a music store a few months ago.

Not yet, neither you nor I. It takes a Beethoven to be on a roll:

I'm not so sure Elise would have been so keen if it had arrived in that form....
Now that's just a shame.

I can't believe my eyes. A Luke sighting! The only recollection unfortunately I have of Luke and I talking was when we were discussing Martinu and Tippett. Other than that, I don't remember much about him. I suppose many of the older GMG members remember him much better than I do.

I stood right alongside him to see the Gothic Symphony live. Luke is awesome, and I'm honored that he returned to comment in this thread  8)

Very cool, Brian. I've always admired his knowledge of composers like Janáček, Ravel, and, of course, Martinů.

Luke

I didn't miss him at all. Tedious chap.

Here's the Maple Leaf Easter card I was talking about earlier in this thread - I found my in-store photo of it just now, didn't realise I'd transferred it to my laptop  :o

I've never found him so.

As to your not missing him . . . you remind me of a (possibly anecdotal) country song which a Maronite priest once told us of, though I don't suggest your taking it as an Action Item:  "I Sure Could Learn to Miss You, Baby, If You'd Only Go Away."

I have the chance to meet Bruce next month for a Messiaen Oiseaux Exotiques concert at Juilliard, assuming he decides to go. If not, then I'm sure he'll be there for the same group's all-Ligeti concert in early 2015. Should be fun!

I forgot about this, which is hanging on the oven handle in my kitchen. I got it at a general store in my hometown a few years ago. Does anyone know the piece? I'm not sure what it is.

Luke, I have two more mystery score-thread scores on the way!
Beethoven's Op. 133 -- A fugue so bad that even Beethoven himself called it "Grosse".

Luke

It's Brahms, the famous A flat major Waltz from the op 39 set. (My father tells stories of sneaking downstairs at night time, as a little boy, to hear his mother playing this piece to herself.)
