Is this different from Jansons' box set of Shostakovich? I get confused partly because there are a lot of different orchestras in the box.

The performance of the symphony is the same;  my understanding is that the non-symphony "filler" from the original releases is completely lacking in the reissued symphonies set.  To my mind, perhaps the greatest loss there is Robert Lloyd's wonderful rendition of the Mussorgsky Songs & Dances of Death in Shostakovich's orchestration;  but I am now a sucker for the Waltz from the Jazz Suite № 2, as well (which is on this generously programmed CD of the Eleventh).

I think it is the same one, but the symphony box lacks all or most of the fillers the separate discs had.

Should have guessed that a neighbor would beat me to that!  :)

Thanks. Well, worth knowing as his Shostakovich cycle is on my tentative shopping list. Now I'll have a look at the listings of the single discs.

The Mussorgsky is indeed missing from the box, but the fillers accompanying S11 are included, as are two bits from the Gadfly suite with S4 and a recording of rehearsals together with S8.

Thanks!  The Gadfly numbers are from the original issue of the Fifteenth, I imagine . . . the piano concerto which is the rest of that CD (with Mikhail Rudy) must be available elsewhere.

I didn't know that the Mussorgsky/Shostakovich had been reissued!  That's a bit of good, anyway.

Yes indeed. I will have to consider it at some point - and Solti & Aleksashkin.

The 5 euros, 30cds set of RVW from EMI came in yesterday. I still need some sets (the Decca Boult symphonies) and individual issues, but it conveniently supersedes individual issues that will find a second shelf life in a used record store.

Guess that means the 2nd violinist has changed AGAIN; their first two 2nd violinists were women.

P.S. Ms. Violin and Mr. Cello are married.

I'm now waiting to see if my favorite Amazon MP seller (Classical Music Superstore) will get the other Oramo Nielsen recordings in-stock.
