I'm going to have refrain from a list at the moment as I hope to somehow spark some interest in the composer's oeuvre. For those that know Holmboe's music better than I do, this will be an education for me. I know all of the symphonies, many orchestral/concertante works, but I don't know the chamber music at all. There are no stipulations for this poll. Have fun! 8)

Aw, bless.  ;D

Crap, I'm on the spot now aren't I? Okay, here goes... truth be told I still don't know some of my more recent purchases sufficiently well. But these jump out to me, not in any particular order.

Symphony No.8
Symphony No.10
String Quartet No.7
Violin Sonata No.3
Um... let's say Violin Concerto No.2, I'm trying to remember whether I liked this more than the Viola Concerto. The disc that has them both is a must-have.

Well, I didn't really mean for anyone to be put on the spot, but your knowledge of Holmboe seems quite extensive given the reviews you've written and so forth.

It's not so much my knowledge that is extensive as my obsession... you're just finding a polite way to note that I've written about 80% of his composer thread lately.

Before the year is out, I expect a "Top One Hans Rott Work" thread...

OK, just one work: Four Symphonic Metamorphoses
Do what I must do, and let what must happen happen.

Symphony 8
Symphony 10
Symphony 4 (love the opening)
Symphony 6
Symphony 7

PS love the Cello Concerto too.

Most symphonies above most of his other compositions (many of which I still don't know yet), especially symphonies Nos. 5, 6, 7, 8, 9, 10. But like all the others too.
Of the many concertos: Concerto for Recorder, Strings, Celesta and Vibraphone.

... music is not only an 'entertainment', nor a mere luxury, but a necessity of the spiritual if not of the physical life, an opening of those magic casements through which we can catch a glimpse of that country where ultimate reality will be found.    RVW, 1948

I thought that you'd respond to this thread.  8)

That's four works. Just because the only recording of them is on one CD doesn't make them one work.

I'm going to cheat and include all the chamber concertos.  These are intimate works that I feel play to Holmboe's strengths, and the beautifully played and recorded Koivula CDs certainly don't hurt.

Why does it matter? You always cheat in these polls.

Archaic Torso of Apollo

Symphony #6
Symphony #7
Symphony #8

Those are all great symphonies. I don't know the brass quintets.

Any particular favourites you'd like to pick out?

I'm still getting to know most of them really. I had the Hughes/BIS recordings (of 1, 3, 7, 8, 10, 11 and 12) but had probably only heard each a couple of times on first purchase, and I only acquired the complete Koivula recordings very recently.  There's still a few I haven't even listened to once yet.

The first volume is as good a place to start as any.  I've embarked on a survey, and will try to keep notes on the ones that particularly stand out.

Ah, gee, MI, I didn't realize I was being so hurtful.
