Does anyone have this box set? Is the sound quality decent?

I had it, and yes the sound is decent.
Of course I can't check anymore, but transfers must be from the late '80s or so. Naturally sound-wise the new transfers in the AR Edition are better. This sets contains the latest recording for each piece. That means for the larger part the later stereo recordings, with a mono recording for some pieces.

This from Arkive music:

On 11 discs this set contains virtually all of Artur Rubinstein's classic stereo recordings made for RCA in the 1950's and 60's. In addition there is a bonus disc, number 11, with earlier interpretations from 1946 of the Berceuse, Barcarolle and Sonata no. 2. The later stereo recordings of these works are included in the set as well, but this one mono disc also includes the only RCA recording of the Preludes, Op.28.

Arkive music missed the tail-end of the blurb.

only RCA recording of the Preludes, Op. 28, which is wholly unremarkable.

definitely not one of his better Chopin recordings

Glad I didn't get it when it was $30!

Is this a real box set, or one of those sets where they put all the individual plastic CD cases in one big paper slip?

Holden

The Nocturnes alone are worth the $18 IMO. Interestingly, Amazon are also offering the box for $18.98. They might be quicker on delivery.

That is where I ordered mine from Holden and they had the 4-7 week delivery time.  I already have the Nocturnes on the AR Collection and one more disc of Waltzes (thanks again Que), but I was palnning on giving my God children a Nocturne set, so this works out nicely for me should the sound of both be about the same.

Probably will be. Max Wilcox was the producer for the 60s recordings and he made sure that the sound was good. Maybe some minor sonic enhancements in the new RCA collection but hardly noticeable I'd say.

I hope that long delivery time doesn't indicate that they don't have a copy.  :-\

It could be this, especially due to the fact that Arkive has it listed as a "Special Order" which means:

Special Order: If we cannot ship this title in 45 days, your order will be cancelled and you will be notified via email.

Yeah, I would have amazon cust service call you using the "Contact Us" button on their site. They should be able to clarify.
