Whenever someone claiming to be an Artist shows me their work, and it's just not... there... formed... I see the lines and edges... I want to just say, No!

- Anne Geddes' baby photos

- Nagel's tripe

- Cutsey country-style decorating accessories, plaques, clocks, etc. with various trite sayings, blessings, etc.

- Any cutsey black and white photo of a naked baby hanging in someone's bathroom

- That stupid installation in the Seattle Art Museum of old Ford Taurus-es hanging from the ceiling

- Religious knick-knacks, especially angels

- D & D style artwork with dragons, buff shirtless heroes, maidens, and various associated crap

I'm sure I'll think of more later! >:D

Had to check that out:

Well, now you know...it sucks. :P (You can see the old lady with the cane and the little girl behind her are both yawning, while the young woman to the left is bent over, possibly about to puke)

I was last there in 2010. I wondered if they still had it. The museum does have some great Australian aboriginal art, and some very interesting glass pieces. Seattle is one of the world capitals of glass art, with Dale Chihuly, the Pilchuk Institute, etc. Also check out the Traver and Vetri Galleries.

I will go with almost everything there. Except the shirtless heroes and maidens. I like shirtless maidens, and why shouldn't the ladies be shut out of shirtless heroes.

The Perez Museum has an installation similar to the Taurus thing, but it makes sense. It is a bunch of model boats (large but less than lifesize), the theme being the importance of maritime traffic to the Caribbean in general and South Florida in particular. I have photos in my Flickr photostream, which you can access from this post. Hit the globe under my avatar.

But I do object to all these grand modern art things That Have Deep Meaning, but turn out to be mostly codswaddle.

Hating is for those who doesn't have better things to do. Ignoring is for those who have better things to do. I mean how difficult is it to ignore Anne Geddes' baby photos? I don't even know who the f*ck is Anne Geddes! I won't even Google her because I have better things to do. Are we Finns the only people safe from her baby photos? The rest of the planet is invaded? ???

But, this is the thread about art we don't like, Karl;)

That's right, any interest in cultural products that leads to one finding something they don't like is for those who don't have 'better things to do'. Hating crappy vampire erotica is for idiots who read literature in the first place, and don't have anything better to do. I'm sure there is some composer you're not too enthusiastic about - well it's your own fault, exploring classical music is for people who don't have anything better to do.

Arno Brewer's sculpture. I feel it's power, and that creeps me out, which is why I hate it. Hanging Ford Taurus provoke no artistic response. They aren't worth hating.

Norman Rockwell

Frida Kahlo
FWIW (may not answer your objections) I consider Rockwell a fine characteristic illustrator (if veering at times to the sentimental side). I think the trouble is, treating him as A Great Artist.

But I think Rockwell a better artist than John Williams is a composer >:D

Viz. Kahlo (and mine is an opinion-in-progress), I wonder if she is not something of an icon for the debasement of Art evaluation: a woman (and We Must Promote Women Artists); and the Interesting/Socio-Politically Relevant/Empathy-for-Personal-Misfortune considerations trumping, or at the very least conditioning, the concept of Artistic Greatness.

N.B.: I am inclined pretty much to like the work of both Rockwell and Kahlo, I simply shy from the idea of vaunting them as Great Artists.

When seeing the originals in live exhibition, you find that if nothing else, Rockwell was an extraordinary technician. Much of the nuance was lost when reproduced for the Saturday Evening Post covers. And not all of his work was maudlin either. I wish I could remember and offer some examples, but the museum near me that hosted his touring show prohibited photographs.
