I found this photograph in a jumble sale. Who could they be? The man on the right makes me think of a young Eugène Ysayë...
The violinist: I have no idea.

Any thoughts? Suggestions?

The new erato

Might R Fuchs be a hint? There's a whole family of them, including a Robert Fuchs.

Jo498

Could be a hint, but I thought R. Fuchs was the name of the photographer... Wörishofen is a little (Spa) town in Bavaria.

Alas, no.
Rudolf Fuchs had an "Atelier für Photographie" in Kurort Wörishofen.

In a Kurort as Wörishofen all kinds of musicians may have given recitals. It propably is NOT Ysayê. I found a photograph of a young Ysayë - his hair is much longer and more curly...

Do you have a date for the photograph? I am certainly not versed in late 19th century fashion but those broad collars and loose ties/cravats look more like 1870s than 1890/1900s to me. Of course, young artists might follow a somewhat different fashion than young doctors or military officers...

Hi Jo498,

unfortunately, no date is given on the photograph. Personally, I'd guess it was taken somewhere between 1880 and 1900...

Anyway, these guys just could be friends, family... unknown travellers.. who played some music at the Bad Wôrishofen casino...

Somehow, that face ( person on the right) seems familiar.

Given the popularity of music in those days, coupled with the rarity of photography, they could be just about anybody and the instrument and book could be nothing more than props. If it's potentially the only photograph you'll ever sit for, you'd probably set the conditions to reflect exactly how you want to be portrayed and remembered. And the guy on the right has a pretty impressive mane. I'm talking Celibidache impressive. Estimating the date of the photo, he could be his father. Wouldn't that be something?

Great point. Aside from the general awkwardness of their pose, the violinist's bow grip is unusual even for rest position.

Yes, one normally would not grab the hairs of the bow like that.

I agree that the man on the right looks very familiar, somehow. Couldn't identify him yet, but promise that I will keep trying.

I've sent the photograph also to 'The Strad" and quickly got a reply:according to their specialist, the person on the right is indeed a very young Ysayë ( ca. 17-18 years old). The violin player, however, remains a mystery... for the time being.

I'll keep you informed.

And thanks for the replies.

I was going to say that the person in the two photos had the same face, but I guess you know that now. I doubt I would read too much into the pose - it could have been a photographer telling them how to arrange themselves.
Be kind to your fellow posters!!

My guess is that the guy on the left is much younger than one might think.
His moustache looks a bit 'adolescentesque'.

So, without question, it must be Leopold Lichtenberg.
