Excellent, Jeffrey! Is this your first foray into Suk's sound-world? Of course, I don't like his music as much as Dvorak's or Janacek's, but he has composed some good music. A Summer's Tale may be my favorite Suk work of all. I think you'll appreciate some of the Straussian and Mahlerian overtones in his orchestral music.

Almost.  I have an EMI recording of Asrael.... somewhere or other.  Been so long since I listened I have no memory of what it sounds like.

Asrael Symphony is a devastating work and one of Suk's bleakest and possibly his most personal orchestral work. It was originally written as a requiem of sorts for Dvorak (Suk's teacher and father-in-law), but during the writing of the piece, he suffered another devastating blow, his wife died rather prematurely. This caused him to look even more inward and Suk suggested that writing this work was a huge release. It was upon the composition of Asrael that Suk's music took on these darker contours and became a bit harder edged.

Okay....well...I had a CDCDCD slip, but thankfully the results weren't too bad:

Excellent choices, John.  I have both of these recordings, and treasure them!  One of my most often listened to string quartet sets of any composer.

Excellent, Ray! It should be noted that I own all but one of the Dvorak Supraphon colored boxes now. The one I'm missing is the Piano Music set, but I'm not keen on solo piano music like some members here, so I'll pass on that box.

I should take up your example and I'm not going to buy any CDs until next year. I like your idea of buying one large order and then not buying anything for half the year or even the rest of the year. I'm going to try this. Wish me luck!

(BTW that Mackerras symphonic poem disc is grrrrreat, but it's not the original release of Golden Spinning-Wheel - that was coupled to Symphony 6 - so you have more shopping to do  ;D ;D)

Hmm...so I do. I'll get those other Mackerras Supraphon recordings at some juncture. Possibly a Christmas order. Until then, I have six Dvorak Supraphon sets to keep me company until then and not to mention what my dad already owns. 8)

This one has been on my List for some time so I finally decided to buy it.

Coincidentally I sampled this the other day and had kind if a Ho-hum...sounds prettty predictable experience...
Please let me know your impressions... :)

I should have thought you already owned the whole 3-cd series...  ???

Got this one mainly for André Caplet's transcription of the Images (as most of the other pieces included in the set I already know). Listening to it as I write, and it's very good. Debussy's music is soooo attractive "in black and white".

The studio recordings with the Domaine Musicale and with the BBC I've owned for many years, but the Concertgebouw stuff (Jeux, Song of the Nightingale and Bartók's VC1 with Menuhin) was only available in an OOP and now outrageously expensive RCO set, so this new compilation was a no-brainer (even if it's rather awkwardly put together, to be honest).

Will do. I bought Vol. III some time ago and really liked it. I did not sample this before purchase just based my decision on that earlier experience.

I certainly didn't need a third cantata set, but Arkiv has this at a nice enough price and you only live once.

Ooh. They've made the packaging very nice. Even nicer than my 5 boxes.

This is the only set of cantatas I have, and I'm only up to volume 31, but it's seemed pretty good to my ears.

I have high hopes for the set.  I very much enjoy his Bach orchestral music set, and most descriptions and reviews I've read of his cantatas make me think they should be extremely fine.

Primo set, the best cycle.
