Re: Brahms' chamber music.  John, oh boy!!  You are in for a treat.  Brahms' chamber music, like Erato mentioned, is something I never tire of hearing.  One gem after another.  As an overall oeuvre, there is no composer's chamber music I prefer.

Thanks, Ray. I'm really looking forward to hearing it all. :)

Quote from: Spineur on June 16, 2016, 08:11:06 AMAgreed !!  You are often raving about Dvorak chamber&symphonic music, but Brahms is I find on a much higher planet.  Only Schubert and maybe the big Ludwig comes close.

On a desert island, Brahms would probably be my choice.  Deep, moving, full of invention and creativity.  Really extraordinary music.  After this box, you may even revise you list of favorite composers !!!

Brahms is already in my "Top 10" now. ;) But, yes, I do look forward to this musical journey very much.

Following the recommendations on the Ernest Bloch thread.  I also bought his only opera "MacBeth".  This is yet another example of an opera in French composed by a non-french composer.  Actually, one day I am going to make the list of all of the French operas composed by non-french.  Its going to be a pretty long list.

Had another slip-up:

I was weighing the pros and cons of all the Rusalka sets available and Neumann won in the end. Mackerras' recording was certainly a contender, but it was Benakova who had the one of the most appealing voices and one that I preferred over Fleming in the Mackerras recording.

If you decide you like her voice, there are some wonderful discs with her, with example this one:

Had another slip-up? It won't work, been there done that. The only thing that worked for me was having kids then you get so busy buying diapers, formula, taking them to school etc. that 90% of your cd listening/buying time is gone  :P

Anyone a great recording. I have the Mackerras as well and that one is also excellent. I for one don't have a preference for either Fleming or Benacková as I think their performances are both other-worldly. Some might prefer a "native" voice in Benacková but I don't speak a word of it so I can't begin to say I am aware of any nuances that Fleming might or might not have missed.

I slightly preferred the slightly clearly, lighter texture of the Neumann versus the darker, richer DECCA sonics but that is just me. Surely No one can question either Maackerras or Neumann's authority in this repertoire. If you have the money I would say buy both (I think the Mackerras can be had for under $10).

Sometimes digital pricing is silly:

A 7 disc composer portrait of Arne Nordheim for $9. I've already heard and enjoyed a couple of the works on it, so this is a no-brainer.

If you want to Loc' out, the Freiburgers did some of the op. 1 a few years ago.

And the Brilliant recording of the complete concertos was good.  The only thing in that box I did not like was the use of the Caprices in the violin concertos, and that can be blamed on the composer, not Brilliant.,

Thank you Jeffrey. The Brilliant set is currently on my List.
I have just found the Freiburgers performing some of the Locatelli Op. 1 and it has now also gone onto the List  :)

That's certainly true. I can only imagine what kids can do to a CD collection. :) Anyway, I appreciate your feedback here. I side a bit of a side-by-side comparison of the Neumann and Mackerras and preferred Neumann's clarity here and not to mention his the flow of the music. I'm sure Mackerras is good, too, but I'm just going to settle for Neumann for now. Can't wait to start digging into this music.

In late December I will be going back over the thread to count exactly how many slip ups you experienced.

And this which I could have skipped, since four of the five CDs are in the SEON box ... but it's Mozart

I have the Schieferdecker and Flor/Becker discs Harry. Both are great performance-wise. Schieferdecker (Buxtehude's last pupil) is superior musically.

Thank you for this info. I am looking forward to the discs I ordered. i must admit that the Schieferdecker disc sounded like great music. It's a new composer in my collection.

You're welcome. Schieferdecker seems a very interesting composer, sadly not much performed/recorded (a lot of his music seems to be lost). The only other disc I have is "Geistlishe Konzerte" on Carus label and a short organ work on CPO (Flamme's series of the North German Baroque).
