Isn't it illegal to lock the kids up? At least for substantial amounts of time? In any case, check occasionally to see that they have air and water, Mark.

;D

Thought I'd show you the new units I bought and assembled yesterday. What a difference they've made to my previously haphazardously stacked arrangement.

Here they are with doors shut ...

Mark

... one unit with its doors open ...

Mark

... and here's inside that unit in a bit more detail.

Really sweet!!!  :D

What sorting of filing system do you use?  For example, category->composer->title, or say, period->composer->title?  If by catergories, what categories do you use?

Alphabetically by Composer -> Work -> Conductor (or Main Soloist and/or Label, if there's more than one recording). Everything else (samplers, compilations, etc), are just filed alphabetically by CD title.

I quite like those...

Price? Where are they from? Ikea...?

I'm ashamed to admit they're from here.

Assembled both in under two hours with just the supplied tool, plus a cross-head screwdriver. I then loaded my collection into them and simply slid them (from the base) into position. Whole process took less than three hours. :)

No need. I'ld like to say my cabinets are bespoke originals from sustainable beech woodland on the Chilterns, lovingly crafted by skilled artisans, with cabinet making skills handed down from one generation to the next...

But no, odd's and sod's bought from Argos over the years!!!
:P

Are they sturdy? Never been overly impressed with any furniture from Argos, but then that might be (highly likely to be!) my distinct lack of aptitude for DIY...

Yes, we have no bananas

Those cabinet units look very smart Mark!  I also admire your organizational skills I only wish I were that organized!!!  By the way I couldn't help notice that Davis Dvorak Symphony box set with the Philharmonia Orchestra of London (as I am sure you are aware I have been obsessed with Dvorak lately  0:)) - how is that set?  I saw it marked down to £13  :o at HMV (opposite Bond street tube station) the other day.  It was too late by then I had already purchased the Kubelik set from amazon  ::).  I was surprised to see that the Davis Symphony cycle comes with both serenades and other pieces as well- I wish I had done my homework before buying!

I have Davis' Sixth Symphony - ok but I don't remember returning to it after buying a few other performances. It was coupled with a quite lovely American Suite (Michael Tilson Thomas).
For a bargain, you can't go better than Otmar Suitner's box set, if you can find it. Amazon.de has it for fifteen euros (Marketplace), but their UK site doesn't list it. A truly glorious #6, along with terrific 2, 3, 5, and 9 and the best 8 I've ever had the joy of hearing (though I haven't heard Kubelik's).

You probably made a wise choice in buying the Dvorak symphonies set that you did, Marvin. Davis takes an approach throughout that's not exactly authentically Bohemian. And the fill-ups can be had better elsewhere. So, unless this set is knocked down further to about £6, I'd say you can live without it. ;)

Looks great Mark. Will keep exploring sticky fingers off your precious collection  ;)

Whats that book[?] on top?  '1001 Classical...?'

It's this one:

And before anyone rolls their eyes and thinks they know exactly which recordings get recommended, let me say that just from casually dipping into this book, that I've already had my preconceptions challenged. Some surprising choices which might be worth exploring some day. And speaking of exploring, the reason I bought the book is because I wanted some sense of what might constitute 'core repertoire', to see if there's anything substantial missing from my collection.

If you can get the book cheap (cost me £10, so half price), I'd say grab it. It'll while away many otherwise idle hours. ;)

I thought it may be one of those series. I have the movie one which is quite decent.

I think I need the classical recordings one too!  ;)

Would be VERY nice if someone posted some (or all) of that list.

George, I'm compiling an Amazon Wishlist to reflect some of the suggested recordings. Not much in it yet, but I'll post a link when it's a bit fuller so you can see what's recommended. ;)

Very good idea. One request? Can you either do it here on this thread or PM me the link? I don't read too many new topics these days.  :)
