Son of art, Matteo Musumeci (Catania 1976) is a leading figure on the international composition scene.
His artistic training, together with his conservatory studies, is nourished by the great school of theatre; since he was a child he has lived on the stage and his natural vocation immediately led him to embark on the path of composition. At 16 he wrote the first stage music for the Teatro Stabile of Catania, later dedicating himself to symphonic and operatic composition.
His international career took off in 2001, when one of his pieces, «Resta qui», winner of the "Premio Andrea Bocelli" international composition competition, was recorded by the famous tenor on the platinum disc Cieli di Toscana. In 2005 he made his debut at the Moravian-Silesian National Theater in Ostrava in the Czech Republic, with his opera in two acts Aitna (ed. Suvini-Zerboni), a fantastic journey through the myths and places of the Etna volcano. Two years of performances followed, the performance at the Katowickie Opera Festival in Poland and the International Music Prize in 2008 in Toronto. Among his successful compositions, Symphony no. 1 called Stormy time, the Symphonic Suite from the Opera Aitna, both performed in the world premiere at the Politeama Theater in Palermo for the Sicilian Symphony Orchestra Season; the chamber opera Il circomagico, with a libretto by Gianni Clementi; Symphony No. 2, four string quartets, incidental music for numerous shows, staged by the Teatro Biondo of Palermo, the Teatro Stabile of Catania and the Teatro Brancati, instrumental music for various ensembles, performed among others by the Stradivari Sextet (Accademia Santa Cecilia) and by the Ex Novo Ensemble. His music, also written on commission by important opera companies (Gran Teatro La Fenice in Venice, Teatro Massimo Bellini in Catania, National Opera Theater in Prague, Teatro dell'Opera di Brno) has been performed, among others, by 'Sicilian Symphony Orchestra, National Philharmonic Orchestra of Odessa, Warsaw Symphony Orchestra, I.J. Paderewski Philharmony, Brno Symphony Orchestra, in Canada, Poland, Germany, China, Czech Republic, Bulgaria. Among the most recent successes, also in cinema, we remember the music for the docu-film I sons of the set, produced by Carlotta Bolognini and directed by Alfredo Lo Piero, presented at the Giffoni Film Festival 2016. Great success with audiences and critics received on 2 February 2017, at the Teatro Massimo Vincenzo Bellini in Catania sold out for the event, the world premiere of his Diva Agatha, sung for mezzo-soprano, percussion, choir and orchestra on a libretto by M. Costantino, with Josè Maria Lo Monaco protagonist in the role of Agatha, on the circle drums Alfio Antico, Choir and orchestra of the Teatro Massimo Bellini directed by M* Antonino Manuli.
