QuoteDoes this stretch of cold weather have you curious about the *all-time* min temperature records in South Florida? Here they are:

Miami: 27°F, February 3rd, 1917
Fort Lauderdale: 28°F, January 20th, 1977
West Palm Beach: 24°F, December 29th, 1894
Naples: 26°F, January 12th, 1982

The 1977 date btw is the day it snowed in South Florida (snow flurries that barely reached the ground). There was at least one report of snow flurries in Naples early this morning, which is directly west of me on the Gulf Coast side.

I haven't heard any reports of what the agricultural damage might be. Since almost all of the citrus growing areas were in the freeze zone, I expect there will be some. Tonight will be just as cold, slightly warmer Wednesday, and then another cold front for the weekend (but not nearly as cold as this one).
And two graphics, one from NWS and one from a local meteorologist comparing today's temperatures in Alaska and Miami
To be clear, the record which the NWS graphic talks about is for today's date only.

After several 40+ days here in Melbourne I am slightly jealous of anyone in freezing cold temperatures!!! At least the weather is fairly mild this week.

Brrr!  Hope that you have some clothes on the warmer side and some decent heating?

I did stumble across some information the other day about how to deal with freezing temps and citrus produce (about watering when it's warm, etc.).  Hoping that these temps don't hit your growers hard.

Still very cold here; it could be worse though.  I feel for a friend of mine.  They heat by wood and stick close to home in weather like this (when not working).  Recently, they had issues with their water supply stopping.  Don't know yet whether their pump died (They have a well.) or what the cause is yet.  Possibly weather related?  Will find out.

I have lived in an area that had summer temps in the 80's and I think low 90's but it was dry, so it was pretty bearable.  Also in another area that sometimes had temps around 103, but it was very humid (so I did my best to stay indoors with a/c during the worst of the temps).

How do you stay cool, Maticevska?  And, by the way, welcome to the forum!  :)

Whoohoo!  It was just the control box (re: water pump).  I'm so happy for my friend!

a/c is basically the only way to stay cool. It's not like in colder months where I can put on extra layers of clothing for warmth!

What are the colder months typically like?

Definitely not cold. The lowest normal temperature I would expect is like 4 or 5 and the highest 16.

In Floridian we call that cold.

(Today's afternoon temperature is 53F/11.667C, in the coldest weather we've had in 15 years.)

Kind fellow, I'd take that in a heartbeat!  :)

Warming up slowly here.

A sweet drawing. What happened to your arms though?

How is your music composing going?  I don't know any previous links nor new ones.

Behind my back I think!

I've made a new thread about my compositions and will be updating that thread

Quote from: Kalevala on January 31, 2026, 01:08:40 PMI did some additional measuring; I think that we received 15 inches.  And, yes, the temps have been brutally cold lately.  To answer @71 dB , I heard about 1 million Americans lost power...next day heard 800,000 (was that updates, I don't know).  From what I understand, Tennessee was hit hard and I also parts of Mississippi.  And they're a lot of people still without power--don't know the numbers.

I sympathize with @krummholz about energy bills; they can be brutal!

K

Ah, but no problem for me now... I think I said that heat is INCLUDED in the rent! :)

Now, where I moved from last July, heat was NOT included and could approach $200 during months with extended cold spells.

40+C (I assume you mean?) sounds positively miserable. I'd be jealous of our weather too - I've only experienced a 40ºC high once in my life and don't want to ever again.

Heat wave here today and sunny (30F).  :)  Spent a while trying to bleed some of my radiators.  Can't figure out where (or how) to get the end pieces off of my baseboard ones down in the basement.  Was able to get the end piece off of one of them but didn't find a purge valve!  Sigh, I might have to call in the heating specialists.   :(

Yes C rather than K

Spotted Horses

In coastal California there was a giddy atmosphere after rainstorms in October, November and December left us with a years worth of rain at the beginning of the wet season. Now, January and February, nothing and nothing forecast. It's starting to feel like almost a years worth of rain is all we'll get. :(

Sorry to hear that; hopefully, the weather will change and you'll get more rain.

Yes, when it hit 40C here in London a few years ago, for the first time in my life the weather actually felt rather dangerous (no air conditioning). And I love heat.

Natural California seems a magnificent but unforgiving place at times, the hottest temperature I've ever experienced for example was 50C in Death Valley. But part of CA's attraction for me is that feeling of immense power impervious to human life, which is thrilling as someone passing through, but as you have shown in various posts here, is something very serious for those living there.
