JANUARY - PART III

Note - seven of the songs here were orchestrated specially for Finley by his friend, Rautavaara, one of the last works Rautavaara completed. The composer-arranger died a week before the recording sessions.

You may have heard his father play piano once or twice.

With this recording, Frieder Bernius once again honors the musical legacy of the Bohemian composer Johann Wenzel Kalliwoda. On the occasion of the 150th anniversary of the death of the longstanding court kapellmeister of Donaueschingen on 3 December 2016, the focus is on his instrumental compositions. In addition to the Symphony No. 1, op. 7 – a work that has not been available in a current recording for many years – the release includes the Variations for Clarinet and Orchestra op. 128 and the Concertino for Violin and Orchestra op. 15. It represents a convincing homage to a composer who found his place in the transition between the Classical form of a late Mozart and the Romance form of early Romanticism, between lyrically reflective melodies and "Sturm und Drang" dramatics as well as between homophonic orchestral tuttis and strict counterpoint.

Martín Palmeri's tango mass is inspired by his native Argentina's traditional tango and in particular by Astor Piazzolla's tango nuevo. Piazzolla developed a "new tango" intended no longer as dance music but for the concert stage; by incorporating contemporary forms and musical developments it gave rise to a complex genre of art music. The Misa a Buenos Aires premiered by the Orquesta Sinfónica de Cuba in 1996 demonstrates Palmeri's impressive and equally entertaining talent for integrating stylistic features of the tango into his compositions. The textual basis of the work is the classical Catholic Ordinary of the Mass as it has been set to music for centuries. The scoring for mezzo-soprano, mixed choir, tango quartet, and string orchestra remains close to the authentic ensembles of the tango orchestras of Palmeri's native country. The Gloria, premiered in 2014, a good eighteen years after the tango mass, is of somewhat greater complexity – both in compositional technique and in harmony – and leaves behind the pleasant tone of the mass. In all of its parts, however, here too the melodic and emotional expressive variety remains. Here European tradition and the tango are brought together in a finely crafted and compelling manner.

Finally, the Colorado Symphony now has its own record label:

Sound quality is evidently a selling point:
"Now you can experience these moving works in a new, multi-channel recording specially produced by multi-Grammy Award winning producer Leslie Ann Jones and by Wolfgang Fraissinet, President of Neumann Microphones. Over sixty-six microphones and a German-made Stagetec Aurus digital mixing console were used to capture the virtuosic depth of this performance in exquisite detail. Every nuance and note have been captured for your listening pleasure."

I don't even know where to begin to comment, Brian. So much good stuff coming out!

Highly highly highly recommended if you like these symphonies to have an enormous, muscular, serious but also sweet and tender sound. 8)

Hey Todd - new Potsdam/Manacorda:

Noted, thanks.  I'm guessing a cycle, so I can wait and pay the predicted low price for world class performances.  I'll also be able to compare Manacorda to Hengelbrock again.  Sony Classics Germany is great.

A rather interesting opéra comique from the early Napoleonic empire, based in the Ossianic poems:

Méhul's slighly later Joseph is a very beautiful opera, and I would expect this issue op be just as interesting (as well as to maintain Ediciones Singulares's superb prodcution srtnadards).

Beauty Farm Ockegham Homme Armée and 5th tone masses, Jan 2017

What is the connection between Beauty Farm and The Sound and The Fury? They clearly have the same graphic designer.

Is that cover a joke?

Graphic designer/patron/sponsor. There is this Austrian art duo Muntean & Rosenblum who happen to be big fans of renaissance polyphony and who sponsor certain amount of recordings per year through originally ORF and now, as I undestand, through Fra Bernardo label. The project is titled Paradise Regained and they do the cover art as well. I think they even sponsored the forming of Beauty Farm ensemble altogether.

I gotta say the psychedelic background here makes this cover even more inappropriate than the other one.

Like ok, half-naked model to sell a classical release, kinda weird but I guess no weirder than the Naïve Vivaldi edition. Half-naked model on clashing background... kinda weird and also poor graphic design. And that font is, er, awful, honestly. One for the worst covers thread tbh.
