Which do you prefer?  The Haydn 6 Op. 76 or Beethoven 6 Op.18 quartets?

Haydn Op.76
Beethoven Op.18
I like both equally
I don't like either

Even though the Opus 18 is more advanced in many ways, i'm going to have to go with the Opus 76. It's just too perfect.

I am in complete agreement. Opus 76 is a masterpiece in every sense of the word. Op. 18 shows so much of a Haydn influence that parts of it could have been Haydn, in my opinion.

I'd have to join the unanimous favouring of Haydn. The op 76 set is the work of a master at the height of his powers and one of the monuments of the quartet repertoire; the op 18 set is merely the first flowering of a giant.

op. 77 was most certainly nothing to sneeze at either.

Op.18 is excellent, but come on ;)

Well, I'm not coming.  Although I could go a few weeks without listening to any Beethoven, I could go years without Haydn except for his keyboard sonatas.  Besides, Beethoven deserves at least one vote from this board, and I also don't consider it kosher to pit mature Haydn against early Beethoven.

There's something to be said for this outlook.

Nor do I, although I would like to point out that Beethoven was over 30 years old when he composed Op 18. Still a novice of course, compared to Haydn by 1801, just sayin'... :)

Actually my favorite SQ of Papa's output Ange.  As for the question posed, Op. 18....in a runaway.

I enjoy both but tend to listen to Beethoven's Op 18 more often.

And I don't think it even makes sense to pit two great works of art against each other period.  This is art we're talking about.  I hate how this forum always wants to reduce everything to lists and rankings.  As if many of the posters here can't simply appreciate fine music without bringing it down to the familiar, banal world that they are more comfortable in.  Maybe we should form an American Idol like panel to decide who is the best! ::)

And just to put in perspective how bad the forum is about this-- just like on what's on just page 1 of the general discussion room today:

What is it with people on this forum, and their aversion to polls and such?  Good heavens David, grab yourself a personality and a sense of humour, and have a little fun!

Or is everyone just supposed to listen to "classical music" and be scholarly and stiffed lipped about it and sip our little tea??

Two MAJOR thumbs down on your 'Debbie Downer' attitude.   >:(

I agree with you. This forum is obsessed with polls,  which work is better, which conductor, orchestra etc. I can't see the humour in it at all.
It's just pointless.

I think Todd sums it up best. This forum was created to entertain mostly. I would be interested to learn just how many people actually do take it very seriously, and even then I'd wonder if they'd just say they did for other reasons. I personally gained alot of education from this forum about Our Music. But I like to have fun just as much as anyone else. I would feel bad if I knew that people didn't like to blow off steam in a fun, mutually amusing way, rather than bum out and spread the suck here on GMG.

Why even bother having the option of creating a poll on this site, if all that's going to happen is poo-pooing polls anyway?  Just take away the damn option.  ::)
