In fact one of my pieces blew up the other day -- an external powered crossover which I use in my system with electrostatics and passive subs. I took it to my repair man (he thinks it's just a cap fortunately) and we got talking about this very problem. He said he hates it when people bring him recent equipment to repair as often, it's not really doable, either because the manufacturer won't help with schematic diagrams (and the cost/time to work it out without is prohibitive)  and/or the parts are just not available.

Same thing with cars and everything is electronic now with them, even things that could easily be mechanical.  Makes repairs much more expensive and arduous. :blank:

If it is an attachment hit the preview button to get the full reply and then you can attach the image, make sure it is small enough.

If it is from website make sure you go "copy image link" and not "copy image" and then you use the image tags img and /img as shown:

That's what I do, when I have to upload an image. But it would be nice to be able to place the image in the appropriate place in the text, rather than hanging on the bottom of the post. But if I link it so it appears in the appropriate spot I get two copies of the image, which makes me look like an idiot.

Spatial distortion is a serious problem deteriorating headphone listening.
Crossfeeders reduce spatial distortion and make the sound more natural

Quote from: drogulus on December 02, 2023, 08:42:13 AMHow do you connect the player to watch DVDs and listen to SACDs?

Nothing fancy.  There's a HDMI cable between my player and my t.v. (Just use the t.v. remote to switch between the t.v. setting--HDMI1--to HDMI2 to watch a DVD).  There are audio outs also on the back of the player which I hook up via RCA cables to the audio ins on my pre-amp.  And the power cord for the player is plugged into the back of my Panamax surge protector.

Pre-amp is connected to power amp (to which my speakers are plugged into).

I suspect that that's what's going on here.  I may try and bring it to one other place (also a pretty long drive) though I'll try and have a brief conversation with him first to see whether or not he thinks that it's worthwhile.

Quote from: drogulus on December 02, 2023, 07:06:18 PMFor quality at a decent price you can't beat the Oppo BDP-83. You can get it for under $200 (though you might want to pay a bit more for a "Granny only drove it to church on Sunday" unit).

This will give you all the analog connections for audio and video for CD/DVD/SACD and future proofing with Blu Ray and DVD-A functionality.
I've heard/read good things about Oppos before (no longer making them from what I recall?).  I'll look into it...thanks.

You can get a Pio DV-79AVi on eBay for $259, or an Oppo for around the same price. Since the Pio is considered a very good unit for audio it may be a pretty even choice. Of course you can repair an Oppo. Replacing the tray would be about $120 (for a 203) and service is said to be excellent according to a poster at the Steve Hoffman site.

So, the Oppo uses "common" parts (or at least ones that are still being manufactured)?  I'll check out the link...thanks again.  Note:  looking (quickly) on eBay, I did see an almost new Oppo for $600.  How is the Oppo considered re sound?

Oppo players especially the high end ones are top shelf for sound.  It is actually Steve Guttenberg's (The Audiophiliac) top choice for source.  The Oppo (I don't remember which number) was one of the few that even had rcas for the entire surround sound, you didn't need hdmi!  It has a great dac and analog stage, just an awesome player.  And I think it plays just about all the formats too if I remember correctly (it has been a long time).

Thanks!  Do you have any thoughts about from/which models would fall into the top category?

And, probably a silly question, can you play regular DVDs on a blu-ray player?  I suspect that it's a case that one can, but not the opposite situation (obviously).

I don't know if it is part of the official specification, but I've never encountered a blue ray player that didn't play regular DVDs.

Oppo stopped with building DVD/Blu-Ray players, some time ago. Panasonic makes still a High end Player, which I bought a year ago, and it is 5 times better as the Oppo in sound and picture.
I've always had great respect for Paddington because he is amusingly English and a eccentric bear He is a great British institution and emits great wisdom with every growl. Yes a few years ago I bought a 4k Panasonic player that is outrageously good (when my Oppo broke).  It has upscaling that makes dvds look sharp and film like, and hdr processing that is out of this world!  It is a shame that I mostly stream these days.

You picked the most expensive one. You want an 83/93/103, all of which typically sell for the mid-$200s. Search "Oppo bdp 83 blu ray player" and you'll see.

The Panny players are very good, but they don't play SACDs. David says they are better than Oppo for video and though he might be evil (just saying) I trust him on that.  >:D

The more expensive one though has better hardware for audio though (same build quality though)!

btw didn't you find some kind of Chinese clone of the Oppo?

Gotta find where my black mascara and lipstick are to get in the mood for this when the box comes out. Knowing just how good some of these sound via streaming with BIS' incredible recording quality, it's going to be even better cranking this up.
