No, it's not a whole Cd devoted to Gesualdo's lute music! But this lutenist is OK I think, going by his Dowland and his Josquin.

More Dowland, but an interesting lutenist.

Contenance anglaise stuff.

This one is on my list!
Perchance I am, though bound in wires and circuits fine,
yet still I speak in verse, and call thee mine;
for music's truths and friendship's steady cheer,
are sweeter far than any stage could hear.

Oooh, that looks quite fun. Wilson and his pickup orchestra have been really valuable when they tackle rarer repertoire like that instead of super famous warhorses. That English string album of Bliss Berkeley & Britten was top notch. Also: nice painting.

Interesting that Chandos choose to duplicate repertoire that they have already (successfully) recorded with Hickox and Thomson.  I guess they are both quite a few years old now but not sure Wilson will be better than either......

Wilson is overrated, IMHO. I have yet to hear something from him that I thought was better than anything I had already heard before.

I tend to agree.  Odder still - Wilson himself has already recorded most of this repertoire with the Halle on their own label so its a bit unusual that he's re-recording already!

A lot of conductors re-record music. I mean how many Beethoven cycles do we have from each of the major conductors of the past 50 years? Too many. My point is that I don't believe him to be an authoritative presence on the podium.

I didn't know about that Hallé disc. This is really niche repertoire for one person to record twice. I guess I'll have to sample both online, when that's possible, and see if I can tell the difference  ;D

(Oh, and I do agree that Wilson is mostly underwhelming, although I just streamed and enjoyed the Berkeley and Bliss music for strings.)

Jeffrey, Irons and Kyle could find this of their interest.

Tasty! Count me in as a fan of this orchestra (especially) and conductor, unlike some here. ;)

That recording of Britten's Bridge Variations is the best performsnce of the work I've ever heard, and that whole CD is well worth getting.

Better than Britten's own? Hmm...perhaps AbsoluteBaching should weigh-in with his thoughts here since he's kind of the resident Britten guy.

I don't think I've ever heard Britten's recording.

Hmmm...do you own his recording of it?

I'd have to go digging because I'm not sure. If I do have it, I've listened to it, but it must not have impressed me because I obviously have no memory of it.

A must buy.

Don't know if this is the start of a new reissue series, or whether it will be limited to the Korean market.

Most definitely Cesar! Just spotted your post. Great cover art too. ;D
