I'd say Cambreling is more than merely a "competent" conductor. He conducts several of the ballets in the SWR series, which I haven't heard, but I can tell you that his Messiaen box set of the complete orchestral works is fantastic. I'm not a huge Messiaen fan, but I have to give props where they are due.
Well, sure, it was a generality, the EMI box contains the work of many conductors too. I have a rareish Cambreling Janacek Sinfonietta that's great.

Does anyone know if the Warner set is available for download or streaming? I can't immediately find it. I'd be fascinated in this day and age if it's physical format only.

I'd undoubtedly buy the physical box, but online formats are useful for sampling.

Edit: the box is not online. Its components are though, even at least some of the things that hadn't been on CD before had been packaged for online purchase in the last year or two.

Sounds rather nice to me.

There are a couple of teasers available now, which will give you an idea of their sonority.

Finally a "modern" harpsichord recording of the Hexachordum!  :) Lining up for a listen....

You must have forgotten Simone Stella.

Vikingur Olafsson is always must-buy, but the new one sounds really intriguing: a program of Icelandic and Hungarian music, with bits of Brahms, Schumann, Ades, and Bartok, held together by "interconnecting works" from Kurtag. Inspired by meeting Kurtag in 2021.

If anyone can make something like that work, it would probably be him. I was thoroughly impressed with how well the Rameau-Debussy album flowed.

I don't think a lute-harpsichord qualifies as a "standard" harpsichord.

A major oversight indeed!  :) I never got Stella's complete Pachelbel.

But that was before I had access to a streaming service, perhaps I should give it another shot.  :)

I totally missed that, but Wolgang Rübsam is not quite on my musical radar....

Modern ≠ standard

Modern ≠ standard

To be clear. With "standard" harpsichord I mean period harpsichord or a copy thereof, which has become the standard of today.

The lute harpsichord is not a harpsichord in the proper sense, since it is missing the standard harpsichord stops.

If this has both his 1951 Debussy recordings along with the oft reissued 1953/4 recordings, I will have to buy the set just for the former.

The Giesking box is something I have been hoping for since the days of the big Meyer/Nat/Cortot/Francois/Ciccolini boxes. I wonder why it took so long for him to get this treatment. 48 CDs is more than I would have thought - eager to see the contents. Didn't he record a bunch of Beethoven that was never officially issued?

Gieseking was recording a complete sonata cycle when he died.  It was all issued on LP.  Select sonatas have been reissued on CD.  When combined with the Saarbrücken radio recordings on Tahra, an almost complete cycle can be put together.
