Quote from: JBS on January 31, 2026, 06:36:07 PMI'm listening to the full album [Bach gamba sonatas Haimovitz] on Spotify on my phone. The cello obviously dominates but not to the point of damaging the performance: the clavichord is able to assert itself at times. But more importantly there's nothing in the performance that makes me want to hear it again.

My rudimentary sentiment too.
Reality trumps our fantasy far beyond imagination.

The last two covers displease.  The Puccini thing because the faux amateur look is bad even when done by a pro, and the latter because of the pose.  The lighting is ace.

Not as cringey as some of the other photos from that photoshoot (or else he has only one set of clothes for photo shoots).

[It also yielded another cover for Gramola, but that one isn't very cringey.

I'm okay with a male musician with muscles.  ;D

I'm sure beefcake would be used to sell classical music more often if there was more beefcake in the classical music world.

Well, there is also the factor that the biggest audience for classical music appears to be straight males. The visual appeal is tailored accordingly.

But every now and then they supply somebody for other markets.

Pavarotti.
I think he was in his early/mid twenties at the time of this photo.

Wow. I would have never gotten that right.

Nor me. The lack of a beard makes an enormous difference!

Having watched that great Verdi Requiem conducted by HVK at La Scala Milan in 1967, where an unbearded Pavarotti was brought in at the last moment to replace an ailing Di Stefano and produced one of the best tenor performances in tbhis work I've ever heard I picked it quite quickly. Without that beard you can't mistake the jaw line.

Yes, think of Wolfgang Rübsam with and without a beard.

Well, who is this guy then?

Don't know. My first association is Vikingur Olafsson, but he hasn't got a beard today.

Edit: Google says Leif Segerstam. Certainly surprising.

The clue was on the stave paper

it's written Symphony No.174.

I guessed this one correctly, but only by thinking, "Who was famous for having a great big beard?"  ;D
