Quote from: JBS on February 27, 2026, 04:27:38 PMBrilliant issued a dozen or so volumes of Boccherini quintets. The ensemble name was La Magnifica Comunita.  I would presume at least some of it can be streamed or downloaded somewhere.

I just started with Vol 5 picked at random - it seems excellent to me, thoght I thought a bit less fluid, less mysterious more rigid, than Karski, but I could well be wrong, and it could obviously be a question of which quintets, obviously.  Lovely music.

Switched to The Philharmonia Ensemble Berlin on Denon, and that's more like it!

Interesting. And surprising to see DG returning to complete symphonic cycles (of repertoire that was absent from their catalogue AFAIK --Enesco with Măcelaru, now Martinů with Hrůša--).

Don't forget that DG also issued Ives' symphonies with Gustavo Dudamel and this composer's music wasn't well-represented in their catalog before Dudamel did the whole cycle (w/ the LA Philharmonic).

Anyway, I'm going to be all over that Martinů release with Hrůša. I only see a preorder up on DG's online store, but when it's available through Presto or JPC, I'm definitely going to be pulling the trigger on that one for sure.

Out of curiosity - does a beard that magnificent cause problems when shifting to higher positions on the cello!?

YES!
Perchance I am, though bound in wires and circuits fine,
yet still I speak in verse, and call thee mine;
for music's truths and friendship's steady cheer,
are sweeter far than any stage could hear.

"When Time hath gnawed our bones to dust, yet friendship's echo shall not rust"

Well, surgery done, took a few hours. I am a one eyed Bandit now. There is some pain involved, must apply 24 drops of all kinds of liquid in my eyes, and tomorrow back to the specialist. Looking through one eye makes one tired. I thank all that took a interest in my well being. While I am not yet there the first stage was successful, except and that made me laugh so loudly that I was warned not to do that. They did not properly seal the watertight blanket, so the cleaning fluid made the cushion rather wet, and under the surgical table there was a small river, well we all could laugh about that. So far so good.

Great news--thanks for the update.

First I need to listen to the two Wagner boxes sitting in the TBH pile.

Most Ring cycles are 14 CDs. Were there cuts in these performances. Or was Luisi simply determined to make sure everyone got home by midnight?

Is that even possible with Wagner?

The live performances started at 5pm I believe.  ;D But seriously, the total timing is visible in image 2, 14:49:45, 7 minutes faster than Karajan, 15 slower than Solti, 3 faster than van Zweden. I don't know the work well but I would guess the difference is a decision to split a scene across two CDs, or something like that.

The Krauss Ring is typically issued as 13 CDs, Furtwangler's Italian Ring is 13 CDs, and the Keilberth '52 is 12 CDs.  I think a few others come in under 14.

I checked the Barenboim, Janowski, and Solti Rings, all of them issued on 14 CDs, and in all of them Walkure takes up 4 CDs but could be put on 3 CDs if you don't care where the CD breaks happen during the music.  So I presume that's what happened here.

With a matinee performance, certainly.
