Haydn Keyboard Concertos, nothing special here you think - except these are played on the... accordion!

Hey, hey—some of us here do find Haydn keyboard concerti (even when not performed on the squeezebox) special!   ;D

I'm only saying that because our boss played it and said 'something left field here', so I was surprised when I heard Haydn, and thought 'this isn't very left-fi -oh' (when the accordion started!)

Coming in April on DG, a new series called 'Conductors & Orchestras'

They are 8 CD sets and I don't have the track listings yet, but I will let you know when I do.

4 scheduled for release so far

Karajan & Berliner Philharmoniker
Abbado & Chicago Symphony
Boulez & The Cleveland Orchestra
Bernstein & Wiener Philharmoniker

Thanks

Paul

For the ones I would be most interested in, I have serious redundancies.  But for anyone thus unencumbered, a these sets are a great idea.

Full track listings will go up tomorrow on the site, sadly for the Karajan box I don't know the recording dates ATM.

It will almost certainly be the 1889 version, which he conducted here in Boston last season.  He said in an interview he preferred that version (for reasons I cannot fathom).

I'm not an actual accordion fan....but remember that it is, in essence, a hand held organ.

No, I am sorry, but the accordion does not even come close in sound to a chamber organ. It is probably, with no offence meant to anyone, the one musical instrument that I find incompatible to my hearing sensibility  :)

My point is, that despite the difference in sound, the mechanism is of the same type.

Your opinion of the resulting sound is not far from my own.

Both points graciously accepted in this quarter  :)

Accordion can be great and even virtuosic fun in the right hands, such as Richard Galliano (whom I had the pleasure of hearing live in concert) or various anonymous Romanian Gypsy players (whom I had the pleasure of hearing live at various weddings and baptismal feasts). I'd really be interested in hearing Haydn on this instrument --- given the nature of the music, I suspect it might be great fun as well if played properly.
