Particularly noteworthy to this instrument are its six pedals, which serve the purpose of changing the quality and colour of the sound, including the infamous "bassoon stop"

There are four volumes.

These recordings are rereleases of recordings which were released by Beyer in 1998. There is complete overlap with the four-cd's set Brilliant released 2011 - probably identical recordings, which are somewhat old fashioned in performance style..

Gottwald died Jan.18. 2023, aged 97.
