N.B. This is a Philips box and the Prokofiev and Tchaikovsky are DG.

Sorry, that is an important point I had not marked.

I did notice it, but I don't know any of the Philips recordings..

I'll mention really liking his Mahler 3 - it's one of the best.  He's hit and miss, like pretty much every conductor.  I'd bet he's more hit than miss.

I have the box set of his Mahler released last year (which is why I won't get this).   I'm not as keen about it as Hurwitz, but his enthusiasm is far more on target than Third Ear's disdain.   The set contains Jens' favorite performance of the 8th (unless he's changed his mind for some reason since the set came out).

A November release.

That is probably just a refresh of this set:

All signs point to yes here. I get rather tired of the reissuing after reissuing. I mean why can't labels actually bring something that's been out-of-print for 40 years back into print instead rehashing the same box set time and time again? This is the part of classical music shopping that I hate! :)

Brian

I think those Warner recordings were ALSO all reissued in a licensed box on Brilliant Classics.

In the case of Helene Grimaud, she sells, and the better the face shot, the better the sales, even to non-classical customers.  Since Warner is in the business of making money more than recordings now, it makes perfect sense.  Besides, Warner is reissuing all of Lili Kraus' recordings for a variety of European labels, and some have not been available for decades, so they do what you wish they would do, too.

I saw a box of 7 discs from Nelson Freire coming out next month--seen on Amazon UK. [Complete Columbia albums]
It's all good...

Well, sure, Todd, they're in the business to make money, but they don't do what wish they would do often enough. :)

I can't recall ever seeing his name in a thread, either liking or disliking him.  Even in the big review/comparison books (the third ear, Penguin), he doesn't come up much (Well, The Third Ear Classical Music Guide mentions him regarding Mahler, but in very negative terms).  If it's a really good box, however, that would be wonderful :) I'm a big fan of them, generally speaking.
I think very highly of Ozawa. Depending on repertoire that's a box I would want.

Yes, but record companies wouldn't be able to do anything if they didn't make money, so best sellers that get reissued over and over are a good thing.
