The new erato

Finally ordered the last missing disc in this series of orchestral music (though the last disc I received of the Les Heures Persanes has failed to convince me after so far two playings, though I will give it further chances):

And a first taste of this composer (though I have to say I didn't buy it on the strength of its cover design):

I think it a more successful piece in its original solo piano guise. Orchestrated, I find it pleasant wallpaper, but I agree: it doesn't sell the piece.

Wallpaper is my impression so far, very good description. And I do have a fascination with Koechlin.

I'm enjoying the orchestrated Persian Hours more and more each time I play it. Karl called it "musical wallpaper" and I suppose to some degree it can be, but harmonically I'm fascinated by it. I hope you enjoy this recording you as much as I have. Beautiful compositions. I'm chomping at the bit to get my hands on a new Koechlin orchestral disc, but it won't be until next year unfortunately. :'(

That Buxtehude cover suggests a bunch of angels in a jail cell....
At any rate,  my postwoman just handed me a couple of packages. One is part of a double order with Presto that includes the Vivaldi CD Keith also got, and some other stuff.

Extremely nice pickings, especially the various Mozart items on HM! :)

I do wonder however, if you wouldn't be happier with the Haydn trios by the Van Swieten Trio (Van Oort et al.)?

Probably my favorite Bruckner Symphony, too... along with... the 8th and the 6th.

Not a bad recording at all... his 7th was very good (review); the 4th certainly had merit (review), the F-minor mass is not my cup of tea. Not the work (for starters), and not in that performance certainly (review, not mine). Very portentous opening in the 5th... and one never quite floats as in some of the best B5 (for me: Celi / MPhil, Wand / Cologne, Jochum / BRSO, Jochum / RCO 86. But in the fleet bits (first movement in this case) I really dig Herreweghe's drive.

Well above average... but not quite top notch.

Ordered this; very good price from amazon.fr.

Let's just say I have further plans for Presto :)
In truth, there is a lot of Brilliant stuff on sale at Presto, but their sale on Naive ends first, so my next order will be concentrating on that label.   Meanwhile, the rest of what's in transit from Presto will probably land today or tomorrow--more HM and Hyperion stuff, especially Haydn.

Thank you for getting back to me on that Jens! :)

And having listened to it this morning, I'll defer to Jens.  Bruckner is merely an occasional pleasure for me, and sometimes one that quickly pales.   This is music I don't keep running back to, so a solid performance, which this seems to be, more than satisfies me.  Whether it will satisfy others more passionate about Anton,  I can't tell.

Thank you for the reply Jeffrey! Your words tempt me to go and add it to the wishlist right now. :)

That has been tempting me, but I really must try to resist as Shaham & Abbado is really as fine a recording of the concerto as is needed, and a bit more.

You should be tempted by the Faust/Harding recording.  It is excellent.

The Shaham/Abbdo disc has been one of my go-to's, but I heard the Faust/Harding recording this morning and it sounded pretty darned good to me! And so did the Sokolov/Zinman Tchaikovsky/Bartok disc!

Daniel, have you actually bought that Bartok/Boulez DG set yet? It can sit in your basket for a long time, but you actually have to click purchase in order to buy it. ;) :D

I am aware of that John! ;)

Don't worry, will buy it soon. Have to buy a new set of headphones first though... I broke my last ones while conducting Mahler in front of the mirror... ;) It is close to first on my 'cds to buy' list though! :)
