I copied Greg and bought this recording also for the MTT led Orchestral Set No. 2 which I didn't have. Now, I own both MTT's performances of Orchestral Set Nos. 1 & 2:

Plus, I bought this so ridiculously cheap I couldn't pass it up even if already own MTT's 3rd performance. Now, I own all of MTT's Ives recordings. Pure musical bliss. :D

Haven't listened to it yet; still impressions are good - sturdy box, wonderful booklet; firstclass production.

Really....? 8) ;D

Good on ya, mate!
And, oh yeah, way cheap.  :)
I love the way MTT handles the closing bars of the 3rd symphony, it's very relaxed and with the fading chimes just adding to its sentimental emotion. So lovely, a piece of music that really comes close to filling these eyes up with tears.

Yeah, it was cheap, so why not? I don't think I've ever responded to Ives with tears in my eyes. His music hits me more intellectually I suppose than emotionally. He's, by a large margin, my favorite American composer. Have you heard MTT's Orchestral Set No. 1 with the BSO? You may want to track that recording down as he does an awesome Ruggles Sun-treader on it along with a good performance of Piston's Symphony No. 2. Here's the link:

These are amazing! Do you know the Toccata disc of quintets? Equally good, and with an even better recording job (not that the Brilliant is lacking).

Yes, I've had the Toccata disc for a few months now; got the Arte Nova Symphonies set a couple of years ago.  Gernsheim's an excellent composer; he may not be "one of the masters", but his music always reaches my heart.

I have the MTT Set No. 1 reissued with Ozawa/Boston Symphony No. 4...but that disc looks appealing for the other pieces, I really enjoy Piston's 2nd.

MTT conducting Ives is like Bernstein conducting Mahler. If I can use that analogy. Everything is so right with MTT's performances. It's like he understands the composer from the inside out. I never cared much for Bernstein's Ives performances, but think his first go on record of Central Park in the Dark is one of the best versions I've heard.

How refreshing for the eyes to see some different design. But being more knowledgeable in classics I wondered for a while: What is Inbal Tech?  :D

I don't even know why James posted that purchase here when this is clearly in the classical section of the forum.

Maybe he also thought it was Inbal Tech.

My box of the first 10 volumes in Suzuki's set of Bach's cantatas arrived today. WHEEEE!!!!

Out of print, seemingly impossible to get (moreso than the boxes for 11-20, 21-30 and 31-40), finally snared one on eBay.

EDIT: Now that I know how to do the link thing...

Arrived this morning: Haydn 62, 107, 108, a CD that fills three gaps in my Haydn symphony collection; and Bax 2 and 5 conducted by Fredman and Leppard, performances considered to be the best of each symphony according to some here and certain professional critics.

"hey, they made a movie about
Mahler, you ought to go see it.
he was as f*cked-up as you are."

Bought this DVD set from MDT at a great price last year.  Alas, it is still in the cellophane ...
