Impressed by Fabio Luisi's conducting on record and live, I decided to see what was available yesterday after hearing him conduct the Dresden Thursday night. His recording of Verdi's Jerusalem received a 10/10 review from ClassicToday and I found it bargained-priced from an Amazon seller. I ordered it yesterday. Today I found it in my mailbox. Superb service! The opera is pretty obscure with few recordings.. It is a rewrite of I Lombardi for the Paris stage. A nice addition to my Verdi collection.

GMG is dangerous for my pocketbook.  For months I've rarely visited, during which time I've probably spent less than $100 on CDs.  My hard-earned dollars instead have gone for frivolties like my kids' tuition, the mortgage, groceries, retirement investments, etc.  But in the past week or two I've been a frequent visitor and as a direct consequence have purchased:

Brahms: Symphony no 4 / Alsop, London Philharmonic
Brahms: Symphony no 3 / Alsop, London Philharmonic

Mozart:  Requiem / Harnoncourt

Thanks, y'all.

Would like to hear your thoughts on these when you get a chance David (especially the Alsop)...a heads up would be appreciated so I do not miss it in the listening thread where things can get buried easily.

You bet, Bill.  I can't say for sure why I ordered them (the Alsop Brahms), except that I'm not altogether satisfied with any of the Brahms symphony recordings I have and these were quite controversial, with some loving them and some hating them, so they might be terrific.  The bits I heard on Naxos convinced me they were worth a try.  The sound quality on the web sucks, of course, but you can hear everything in their catalog for a piddling $20 annually.

It's not one of the items you asked about, Bill, but I'm very pleased with the Hope Bach VCs.  I have several recordings of these and this disc goes right to the top of the pile--though it certainly won't be to everyone's taste.  He included the Brandenburg #5 instead of the usual violin and oboe concerto BWV 1060.  It's good and different enough to make me hope the same forces (COE--what a great band!) record the rest of the Brandenburgs!

A few things this past week:

I'm particularly keen to explore the Berg box. I'd been looking for a recording of the Chamber Concerto after hearing it at a concert some months ago, and Lulu, because Wozzeck was the first 'modern' opera I'd ever heard and found it horrific, raw, gutwrenching, but completely captivating. I came across this box which was about the same price as getting the two separately.

The Chamber Concerto is the one with Barenboim, Zukerman, and Boulez, which was the one I had my eye on anyway. Lulu is the one with Boulez conducting (Stratas, Minton, Schwarz). And I'm also happy to have the Abaddo Wozzeck as well :).

Well that Berg does look good!  Alright I've bookmarked it for later. :)

Hey David - I have no idea why it's going so cheap these days. It's an 8 disk box for $36.97 on US amazon (and similarly priced from the UK.

(The US link has a list of works and performers). Sadly, no libretti.

OK, youse guys, enough is enough...ya just tempted me into springing for:

Beethoven:  Complete Symphonies / Hogwood, AAM (as if we needed another set, says wifey  ::) )
Beethoven:  Symphonies 5 & 6 / Weil, Tafelmusik
Mozart:  Complete Piano Sonatas / Pires (on Brilliant)

That makes about 60 CDs in two weeks.  Ah well...it's a better bargain with more lasting pleasure and fewer side effects than the activities Thomas is promoting these days!

I think (hope!) this is it, George.  The EAN checks out.  Before ordering I A-Bed some clips on jpc from this set and the more recent DG set and preferred what I heard on this--a lighter, more lyrical touch, I thought, and a less stark acoustic.

They did a complete set about 15 years ago for DG (with other soloists).

Quiz her on how many handbags or pairs of shoes she really needs. Then watch her argument crumble. Works every time with my wife. ;) ;D

George that set came so highly recommended (from what I have read it is the "default" recommended set) and after listening to symphonies 0 and 00 (not in this Jochum set) I had to get my hands on a complete 1-9 Bruckner symphony cycle.

I ordered Shostakovich's String Quartets performed by the Emersons, and Boulez's Schoenberg Serenade (along with something else that slipped my mind).  I'll say what I think later when I get them and have a chance to mull it over. :)
