This one I find to be top notch, heard it a few weeks ago, and was flabbergasted by its sheer quality.

I absolutely agree with you, Harry! :)

Do you have the SACD Pappy or just the regular issue?

Hi Bill,

I have the standard version only. I had read about the SACD being top notch too, but at the time i was discovering the various classical genres, so the purchase was budget-driven to be honest.

Which other Summerly/Oxford Camerata recording do you have ? Byrd's Masses maybe ? this one is quite a good'un too !!  :)

What do you say? Oxford or Tallis Scholars?

Corey,

I know that the Tallis Scholars are very much revered by many.  However, there is something about their lower octave singer(s) that makes me flinch from time to time.  I want to buy their cds because of the music they cover, but when I sample them I am just not happy enough to throw down the cash.  In fact, I sampled their highlights disc last night and was just not totally sold.  I am probably in the minority here, so for me Oxford trumps Tallis.  However, (as I type out of the other side of my mouth) I do own this duo, and it works for me, but then again I bought it used so the set back was minimal:

Sooooo, sample, sample, sample and do not let labels or other reveiws sway you.

Thanks. I have Oxford's Machaut and think it's great. I will probably go the same route for Tallis.

Naxos should just box 'em all up and sell for under $100.

The postman came with some nice ones today. Especially I look forward to hear the Walter Bruckner/Mahler/Wagner box set! I'm also preparing for Mahler 9 by Saraste/Oslo PO, 18th of January.

Interesting that you mention the Ebony Band, because their current leader is the prominent oboist Werners Herbers whom used to play principal oboe with the Concertgebouw, whoms student is one of my previous teachers, and a very good one, much in the line of the Dutch school of playing. I listened to the violin concerto, and find it very skillfully written, though lacking somewhat in individuality. I think i will give another spin tomorrow if time permits!

Howard

Hautbois, I take this occasion to ask you for details, comments and personal views about oboe sound according to the various schools of playing out there. I hear a very different sound depending if the player is of the dutch, english, french or german tradition.

What does Barenboim find so funny about Mahler's 9th?
