Music by three composers I've not heard before, or even heard of until recently, who lived during my favorite musical period: Karl Weigl (1881-1949), Emil Bohnke (1888-1928), and Alphons Diepenbrock (1862-1921)

So......did you get the Von Stade disk yet?  I wanna know what you think.

My first post here (in this thread)... I placed an order last night for the following:

Bit of a shock to the bank balance :o
But I haven't made a purchase in a while, so...  ;D

In addition to this treasure-chest of works, and following the recommendations of this forum, I also reserved the following to borrow from my local library:

Looks like that lot will keep me going for a while.
I'll see you guys next spring!  ;D  8)

Looks like a good haul.  Can you comment on the Miasky please?

Daedalus, wow!  :o

Yes, I know - and I'm a poverty-stricken student!

Seriously though, I have been saving up for a while and I also sold a few books and old CDs on ebay.
A great deal of my classical listening has been from BBC Radio Three, borrowing from the library and picking up the cheapest sets I can find (not always a good thing!) So it will be nice for me to actually OWN some quality sets.

I am planning to raid the Mozart to begin with as I have only really listened to the famous works, i.e. symphonies, concertos, a little opera. I've been enjoying the Unlocking the Masters series (I have just finished the Mahler one and that one was great!) and reading those books alongside my listening recently. I have the Mozart books written by Hurwitz, so I figure that'll keep me occupied and focus my listening.

I'm especially looking forward to the Beethoven box. I own quite a lot of Beethoven already but I figure this will provide me with many new finds and I am especially looking forward to further exploring the chamber works.

I have had all of the Sibelius symphonies out of the local library so will be nice to own these. Again, I have the Unlocking the Masters book to go with these recordings. The Rattle version was quite cheap but according to the various sources I have read, his recordings are, for the most part, excellent.

The Shostakovich is going to be a new one with me. I have heard various pieces on the radio and read quite a bit about him but haven't listened to anything in depth. I think I will be leaving that set until last so that I can really absorb it later on.

The Bach Cello Suites and the Haydn String Quartets Op. 76 should provide me with some interesting new works to hear too!

Looks like you'll be busy for awhile with some great music! :)

Yes, I don't think I will need to buy anything else for some time!
I think I've got this year and next year's listening in one swoop! Especially at the rate I get through things, I am a very slow listener tending to make each new piece of music last for a couple of weeks as I 'digest' it fully (for want of a better word!)  ;D

Love those Haydn quartets.

Yes, looking forward to listening to them.

Cheers,

Yes, I certainly shall. I'm planning on giving this a listen to as soon as I pick them up from the library.

You are missing out on Prague!  ;)  But the Immerseel set is worth it anyway.  Get Harnoncourt's live Prague (performed in Graz) with Concentus on DVD.
Yes, but I gained a bassoon concerto :P

Well, I've got René Jacobs version of the Prague from the HM anniversary box. I haven't listened seriously to it yet but I gather it got mixed reviews.

Do you mean this?

Looks tempting, but I've got neither a TV set nor a DVD player (how's that for 'eccentric and unusual' :)) so I'd have to watch it on my computer...

It was shipped by Amazon on the 12th with an estimated arrival of 17 May. I expect it will arrive sooner than that though. I'll let you know.

Yes...but Jacobs's performance is very fine as well - on an altogether less grand scale than Harnoncourt's, however.  Mackerras's set is better recorded (3-dimensional sound), but I'd rather not have semicolon strings and woodwinds in Mozart.  ;)

Famous last words :P; you'll be buying the complete Brahms boxset next week ...

Let us know when it actually has shipped... ;)

I most certainly will, it was a pre-order so it ships in approx. ten days.
I ordered with Amazon.fr proper and not a market seller - I don't expect the deal to fall through.

Just an example: Caiman is a proper seller and they did cancel orders on ground that
the supplier couldn't deliver when in fact it was they who botched with mis-pricing.

Caiman cancelling orders happens to me all the time, always because they did not have the item in stock - though always claim they do - and couldn't get it anymore because it was out-of-print. ::)

Guess we'll have to wait and see.  ;D

True, but remember what you ordered from Amazon is not an in-stock item either.

EDIT.  hmv here advertises it for £22 but delivery is free.

But they can hardly claim that's no longer available. We'll see - I have nothing to loose and a bargain to gain.  8)

Although they can of course let you wait forever for your bargain to come through, especially when they have also advertised the same item at the "normal" price - but of course I wish you all the good luck.  :D

Not for me, it isn't.  :-\ I don't even get a reduction on shipping for larger orders (jpc has a flat rate for instance). I always pay for the free delivery to those living in the US, UK, Germany and France. >:D

(£22 = €27,34, so that's roughly the same as the "other" offer on Amazon.fr)

I quoted hmv because I assume that, among gmg members living in UK, some may be interested in YET another set of HIP Beethoven symphonies in their collection.  Now if they order from Amazon.fr they will be paying a steep shipping charge indeed.

Quite!  :) Beats Amazon.co.uk which asks £28.
Now we're hoping that the recording itself will be worth all our trouble! ;D

Rod Corkin, whose taste in this music runs close to mine, said he doesn't think so after
listening to the preview snippets at the ZZ website.  I myself actually wish for Bruno
Weil instead but Immerseel is probably fine.

On the basis of his recording of the 5th & 6th Bruno Weil, he definitely gets my vote for a complete cycle.
Immerseel might be to much of a Mozartian/Schubertian to really get into our Ludwig. I'm very curious how this will work out.
