Needed to beef up my violin concerto section, ordered yesterday:

I have the Handel on a Caprice LP but needed a CD version.

Based on recommendations on this board, this has been on my wishlist a few months.

This is a composer I generally want to explore more, bought the chamber music disc on Praga this winter and it is great:

That is a fine set Erato, apart from the last one I have them all, and are treasured in every respect.

Ach, yes Chadwick, fine music, but it takes some time to figure it out!

Gernsheim: Complete Symphonies Siegfried Koehler/Staatsphilharmonie Rheinland-Pfalz

I am very interested in what you find of them! Many who bought it, have lost heart somehow in listening further as the second symphony. :P

My advice would be to sample before you buy, Bill, :)
Though I'm a Harnoncourt fan this is not on my list of favourites.
But, like Brian pointed out - it's definitely different and interesting.

Yes, that would be also my advice, I don't like Harnoncourt at all, and this was the first set of cd's I attacked with a hammer, and bare hands until it was completely destroyed, and never regretted that. :P

... $:)

However, we know that our friend "Bogey" here is much more open minded and intelligent listener, so we can tell him with confidence that this set is for him (and not just for him, for anyone who can actually listen).

But still, thanks for your interesting contribution. I don't think I have heard of a set of recordings being discussed in that way before.

Harry, Phantasy for Hammer, Hands and Harnoncourt (Gielen/SWR Symphony Orchestra/narrator M. Schaffer, on Haenssler)

This new recording is really topnotch, and I treasure every moment of it. The sonics are fine, too.

If you can deal with the download thing, then you can get a pretty good price on the set here.

Not all of the tracks are available for download!!!

Initially, I thought that was in reference to that excellent Phantasy for Hammer, Hands and Harnoncourt, but thankfully my alarm was in error.

I wouldn't want to miss a single track of that. ;)

Dave, when this arrives, I have a question about it. The "Back Cover" scan on Naxos' website shows that the back inlay on the CD lists the total time of every track as 00:00. I can't believe that they'd allow such a humongous typo to really get on the back of the CD, and have been aching to find out if it really does list a string of 00:00's.

I purchased it as a download so I can't help you. Sorry.

The Phantasy for Hammer, Hands and Harnoncourt is Harry's op. 3, a very early work, but already showing more than just promise. David Hurwitz was exceptionally fulsome in his praise, singling out the narrator M. Schaffer as the real star of the performance, even more than the ever-precise Michael Gielen.

The Requiem I heard on a previous DG incarnation and didn't really like, least of all for the congested and harsh sound. Maybe that remastering has improved things? The other disc contains the best ever Hary Janos ever made. OTOH the coupled Psalmus again suffers from recording limitations. This is music that should wallow in vibrant, expansive and crystal clear sonics.

Just ordered the Cascavelle recording of Frank Martin's Golgotha (Corboz). There was only one left at CD Universe. I hope it was waiting for me!

Excellent.  If I cannot find the other disc for a great price I will only be out $5 for the cd I purchased today and I will just throw that one in Harry's refusal bin.  Thanks Miloš!

Just keep in mind that $18 is MDT's special offer price which will last till 27th July, after that price will go up.

Didn't notice that. It looks like the whole thing is available at iTunes, but in the awful 128 kbps, DRM-laden AAC iTunes-standard files. If you can deal with that, then it might be a good try-before-you-really-buy thing.

A Hungaroton historical recording (mono?).  Cool.  Let us know how the transfer is on this.
