Sergeant Rock

After waiting in vain for 14 years for this CD to go OOP and return at midprice, I've finally given up and bought it at full price. I tried once to obtain it from an Amazon seller who claimed to have a new copy cheap, but the bastard took my money and absconded to Brazil (or some other lawless place  ;D ) without delivering.

the phone rings and somebody says,
"hey, they made a movie about
Mahler, you ought to go see it.
he was as f*cked-up as you are."

Wow... I remember throwing those into the cutout bins at Tower going, at various points, for as little as 99 ct per three (!) discs. Needless to say that at 33 ct., I was tempted enough to buy most of these discs or whichever ones I did not already have on the Korean label from which I think these were taken.

Indeed a time machine would certainly pay for itself for any avid collector.

I'm OK with it, for I don't collect cutouts.

Not that there's anything wrong with cutouts. In any case, all these Russian Revelations discs were not even cutouts... just in the same bin. Hauled in from other stores closing, usually. Except for the people in the know, few bought them, because they were "too cheap"... so customers thought that they must be worthless. I sorted and horded all the good ones, making them available to choice customers only.  ;D

For resale reasons, I avoid cut outs. Collectors don't seem to like them.

BTW, which Tower did you work at?

Interesting.  I always assume I'll be keeping every recording I buy - the eternal optimist.

It just makes the decision to buy easier for me if I know that I can easily resell it. I don't plan to be dissapointed, but it has happened enough (not so much with classical FWIW) that I am careful about avoiding cut-outs and for that matter club copies.

Just grabbed the last copy of this that wasn't over $125. Mine was $30. I read good things about these performances and the sound, so I had to have it.

Lucky you!

Ditto, George! I like the little I've heard of Cortot in Schumann. I have his A minor concerto on Naxos and that's gorgeously splotchy and heartfelt :D. Also one of my favourites for Kreisleriana and Davidsbündlertänze too (on Pearl) - I alternate between Cortot and Anda :).

Cortot is wonderful in the Carnaval, included in the Phillips set of 20th century pianists.
Arrau is pretty impressive in that work. The earlier and later films are available on youtube.

But for me Rachmaninoff is the absolute summit.

A little scratchy from 78's, but he gives a more accurate reading of the score than those who who are liberal with their own interpolations. The quick tempi are absolutely fearless with equal speed and accuracy.

Try Richter for the PC, quite incredible...

Some goodies (I hope :)) picked up. The Berlioz disc is with Klemperer/PO, and I hope Richter will give me the best introduction to the Haydn piano sonatas.

Bought a few discs, today, including:

Edit: Yes, the covers are uneven in size, but I'll ask for your permission not to streamline them. OK.. 8) Q

Also, I am collecting Gergiev's cycle, and Janson's - if that might indicate some reason to my madness. ;D

The new erato

I thought the Mahler 2 was a CD single.
