My favourite cycle, overall. The only slight downside is the recorded sound is slightly lacking in heft.

Yeah, Supraphon recordings definitely aren't consistant with their audio quality, but I have heard the audio is still good or at least good enough that you can still enjoy the music.

The reviews seem quite favorable for this cycle. Neumann definitely has some tough competition from Kubelik and Kertesz no question about it.

71 dB

J.S.Bach - "Organ Chorales From the Leipzig Manuscript 2" - Rübsam - Naxos
Spatial distortion is a serious problem deteriorating headphone listening.
Crossfeeders reduce spatial distortion and make the sound more natural
and less tiresome in headphone listening.

Not actually purchased today but wasn't online at the time.

Someone (on here I think) has a said - "Less buy more listen" & that's what I'm trying to do. Had a couple of days in London to see Simon Boccanegra & went into Harold Moores & my resolve weakened when I found a Donizetti I hadn't got (Elvida). It's a fabulous shop & I spent over an hour in there so to come out with one CD is pretty good for me.

I didn't buy any CDs either in the ROH shop. I did buy a DVD, Plácido Domingo My Greatest Roles Part II but DVDs don't count. And I did buy a book on Verdi... and a book on Puccini... and a pen... and some chocolate.

Oh, if Arkivmusic put Supraphon on sale, I shall be corn to their sickle . . . .

Karl, are you aware that the corn sickle is the emblem of the Communist Party of India?

You must have not heard Karl's Oratorio "The Kommunist Manifesto", libretto by another Karl.

I actually got these for a good price from Amazon Marketplace sellers, which is the only online company I shop from. I've done Ebay, CD Universe, among others and haven't been impressed with their prices. I've been doing business with Amazon for about 10 years or so.

MI - I like the Amazon Marketplace, but have been using some European sites, such as MDT & JPC (and others); sometimes the prices just are quite different and the shipping may not be that bad 'across the pond' w/ a larger order.

But, another site that I use OFTEN in New England is BRO (Berkshire Record Outlet) HERE - won't go into more detail at the moment since you may already be aware of this site and have not been impressed?  If not, however, take a look at the link - Dave  :D

Thanks for the information, Dave. I have been aware of BRO for quite some time and I have never used JPC or MDT. I seldom buy from overseas anyway unless it's something that I know I can't in the US. I'm not impressed with BRO's inventory or the general layout of their website. They do have some good prices, but I never have found anything that I already didn't have or really wanted.

They sell overstocks and overruns, so a lot of the things they sell are not available from retailers that sell current items.  I don't rely on them, but I've often gotten some impressive bargains.  It is worth the effort to poke around over there every once in a while.

Not for me it isn't. I've gotten some incredible deals from Amazon sellers on out-of-print CDs. Amazon is just easy for me to use and I understand it's search engine better than any other site. Since I'm a collector, I usually am looking for something specific. Like for instance instead of typing in say Dvorak, I will type in something like Dvorak Supraphon to narrow that search down to one label. This seems to work also quite well if you type in say Dvorak Mackerras. You narrow it down to just the conductor. Anyway, I'm comfortable with Amazon and as I have said I have gotten some amazing bargains.

Berkshire also allows search by label, just go to advanced search.  Often I have found things I saw on Berkshire on Amazon marketplace for a comparable price, but there are quite a number of releases I picked up on Berkshire for less than half the cheapest price I could find on Amazon.

Scarpia - I agree completely and have purchased numerous CDs from BRO - I'm not sure that Mirror Image has really given this site a decent try, but just a guess - e.g. just going to the 'Advanced Search' and entering a label such as Hyperion will produce hundreds of options (I've purchased dozens over the last 2-3 yrs); the prices are unbeatable.

Bottom line, for those living in the USA (cheap shipping), please explore BRO - look at the 'advanced searching' options, and enter the labels that may be of interest - you can save much using this source; now, these are often OOP or overflow discs, but I've been amazed at the offerings that have been found -  :D

I just don't see any reason to explore other online stores if I'm getting great deals from Amazon. It reminds me of the old adage "If it ain't broke, then don't fix it."

Well, it eludes me how you know your bargains are great if you don't compare.  Recently I was looking for the Cleveland Quartet's recording of the Beethoven string quartet cycle.  Lowest price I could find on Amazon was $50 for a used copy.   Snagged it for $24, new, on Berkshire.  Similar experience looking for Hyperion recordings of Arnold Chamber music, Amazon Marketplace undercut by a factor of 2 on Berkshire.  Anyway, all the more for the rest of us!

Daverz

I haven't found Berkshire's stock very interesting in years.  They just get in too much junk now.  Not their fault, of course, just what the market for remainders is like nowadays.

Well, I'm feeling that this could go on for a number of endless & useless posts, so will not continue the discussion, except to state that those who have not visited BRO, take a look - you might be surprised and thankful -  :D
