So yes, Brian is as atonal as Bach  ;D

The second volume I ought to have, but - I pre-paid for it in 1987 (!), and it was only published last year... I should contact Martin Anderson of Toccata Press.

Holy crap, that is an impressive boast. I picked up and greatly enjoyed volume one, but am awaiting the paperback printing of the second because I'm cheap :) I'm glad that the second did eventually materialise (even after such a wait), because judging from the blurb in the first (suggesting that there could be up to six volumes), the subjects of the first two interested me the most - so if the rest are not released I won't feel too bitterly for the loss.

You know, I always wanted this 3 disk set;

[asin]B0007OP69E[/asin]

just picked it up on eBay for $4 + $3 s&h = $7. In "Like New" condition. I would have posted it in Super-Duper Cheap, but I would be surprised if someone else would get the same deal. OK, I'm just sort of crowing a little, since it really is a deal!  :)

I'm sure you will love that set, Gurn. It has your name written on it: extraordinarily well played and full of stamina.  :)

I'm sure you're right, Antoine. I've had one disk as MP3's for quite a while and really liked it (rather unusual interp, IMO), so the rest of it, and in full CD sound, can't be beat. And for $4 rather than $25.... :)

Yes, when I listened to that set for the first time, I thought it was the most "Beethovenian" performance of Haydn's symphonies that I had listened to ever.

That set has been in my Wishlist for months.  But, you got it for so cheap!  I'm green.  ;)

Right place, right time, Leon. Sometimes you just get lucky! I have a 'saved search' on eBay for Haydn CD's that I run very frequently, and I saw this about a week ago and put it on my watch list. I actually bid considerably more, but no one else did!  :)

That may be it. Of course, the Paris' were actually written for the largest orchestra that Haydn ever worked with, way bigger than the London's even!  So having a bit of a early Beethoven air about them wouldn't be at all out of line. :)

Quite true--like that word "stamina."  It's a marvelous set, and also very beautifully recorded. Gurn, amazing you found it for such a pittance!

Too late then for ME to rec this disk, but nonetheless, I do. Very nice performances by all concerned. :)

I must have missed those recs, since this looks fascinating. I don't think I've even heard the Janáček.

It was at least several months ago, probably why you don't remember it. Long discussion about Baba, maybe that she's really a pianista, although that would be a big waste of fiddling talent. :)

I'd like to hear what you think about the Rathaus symphonies when you get around to them - I've heard a few bits and bobs by him and loved it all.

Rinaldo

Made the loveliest purchase recently!

To explain: this record was one of the first CDs I've ever seen / heard (circa 1989, just a little kid back then) and I've always been very fond of it, years ahead of my actual conversion to all things classical. Yesterday, I've been walking through the sunny town & spotted it outside an used bookstore, sitting in a bargain bin, the original vinyl pressing.

I don't care much for the Corelli pieces but both Abdelazer & Nachtmusik are top notch here (except for the rather thin sound). The latter is just as lovely as it should be and with Purcell, the Slovaks really take their time – the tempo is almost sluggish, but it really brings out the emotional overtones, especially in the Overture. When I finally heard a different interpretation, I almost thought it was a joke (Sir Roger being hilarious didn't help either)!

But even though I've learned to appreciate different takes on baroque music, this record holds a special place in my heart so I'm overjoyed to have it now on vinyl as well.
