One wonders how that thread ever made it to eight pages.

It's actually an entertaining read, at one point in time a Shostakovich Sandwich was created.  ;D

Given what human nature is, I'm surprised it didn't go further. :)

Looking for some kind of compromise between the awesome (but cut) Kondrashin and the underwhelming Jarvi, I found a recommendation for this disc:

... in the Prokofiev thread. It was cheap, so I snapped it up; am curious as to how the work fares here.

I don't care what anybody says. Dmitri Shostakovich was one of the greatest Russian composers that ever lived. His music is still being recognized for a reason: it's powerful, it's emotionally moving, it's haunting, it's compelling, and it's a reminder of how someone, even under the harshest circumstances, can express their heart through music.

Beautifully said, John! I certainly agree with you. :)

It does but I'm going to hold off purchasing for now. Too many things in the pipeline already. I'm trying to cut down  ;D

Listening to No.39 from this disc. Wonderful performance of a great Haydn symphony. Final movement will give you goose bumps!

Nice. Although the box has been in and out of my radar since its release, I hadn't noticed the breadth of music represented in the collection until today. And I'm also glad to note that this box doesn't suffer from the ridiculous amount of duplication of works unlike certain other sets from the series. Two reasons to bump it up the wish-list.

Good to hear, Neal. Usually Jarvi does well with this kind of music.

The breadth of music, a good price from amazon (it's dropped in price since release), and a good review in the January 2012 issue of IRR was what eventually made me literally push the button. It has been on my radar since its release.
