Many thanks for bringing those to my attention!! :) I made note of that Dowland series by I Fagiolini. Am I correct in assuming there are two volumes? :)

For the Lachrimae I am eyeing the Fretwork recording on a Virgin double - do yo know that recording? In other words: do you prefer the Dowland consort over that? :)

Q

There is another volume, Que, it's...

[asin] B000000A6O[/asin]

...and the Fretwork Virgin Dbl. is very good, for the price it's almost unbeatable, but I would also recommend The Parley of Instruments recording, they have the Lachrimae in order, not separated by additional songs like in the Fretwork Dbl, they perform on renaissance violins rather than viols, delivers a beautifully different sound and their performance is remarkable. I personally prefer the sound the Dowland Consort produces, it resonates with a timeless feel, but I wouldn't argue too much against the other two.

Uncle Connie

Sorry, can't upload photos of these (they aren't on Amazon):  Today's purchases were 7 Haydn symphonies, 2 CDs, recordings made 1960-62 by the Vienna Symphony, Max Goberman cond.  He was on track to make the first comp-lete Haydn set, and got maybe a third of the way, when he died of a heart attack age 51.  GREAT loss.  And until now these much-remembered recordings have lain dormant, but I just this morning found a source of professionally-made CDR reissues for sale at US $12 each plus P&P:

www.haydnhouse.com

I ordered two and, if the quality is good enough, I'll go after more.

Good recording/performance, Sarge? Certainly an outstanding program!

I haven't heard it yet but I liked her Prokofiev performance on youtube. It's a concerto she's associated with (as a competition winner). The Ravel has gotten less critical acclaim.

Please do let us know how you like the Prokofiev. Prokofiev 2nds were never too thick on the ground and I also thought her Queen Elisabeth Competition performance was very fine. Though I'm not sure it was that universally acclaimed, I remember some found it labored and sloppy (or perhaps that was on rmcr).

Landed today...more Pazzolla, another recording of the Concerto for Bandoneon to accompany the composer's own recording, so far really good sound and passionate playing.

I've been considering this one for awhile. Ian Bostridge is just fantastic in Stravinsky's The Rake's Progress. For those who haven't heard his performance in that work, check it out!

I have that as part of EMI's "Rattle conducts Britten" box, and I think it's the best CD in the set by far.

This is good to hear, Jeffrey. I had bought all of Rattle's Britten recordings, except for this one, before that box set had been issued. I wish I had waited but it's too late now! ;) :D Anyway, I'm looking forward to hearing this recording.

Sergeant Rock

For just €19.99 and free shipping from JPC, a 15-CD box I had to acquire even though I'm not a great fan of the harpsichord. Maybe Leonhardt will convert me.
